About The Position

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Weights and Measures, is seeking an individual to serve as Weights and Measures Inspector in a territory that includes Hampton, James City County, Newport News, Poquoson, Williamsburg and York County. The duties include enforcing the Weights and Measures Law and related regulations; testing, inspecting, and determining the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices used commercially in Virginia including motor fuel dispensers and small capacity weighing devices; sampling of motor fuels; conducting point-of-sale inspections; investigating related consumer complaints; completing documentation of activities; and preparing investigative summaries as needed. Position may require occasional overnight travel. The selected applicant must reside, or be willing to relocate, within a reasonable distance of the assigned territory and be able to meet the physical demands of the position.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of inspection, investigation and enforcement procedures related to petroleum, point-of-sale or scales industries (either sales or service)
  • Ability to report facts accurately and to understand, interpret and apply laws and regulations
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment proficiently and safely
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and mathematical ability
  • Effective organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Proficiency with standard office software applications
  • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs. on a regular basis
  • Ability to bend as needed
  • Ability to distinguish colors
  • Ability to exhibit manual dexterity
  • Willingness to work outside in various weather conditions
  • Must have (or be eligible for) and maintain a valid Virginia driver’s license
  • Have a driving record that reflects a sense of responsibility for highway safety
  • H.S Diploma/GED required

  • A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of criminal justice, public administration, or a related field
  • Experience in enforcement, inspection, or investigative activities in a regulatory environment such as weights and measures
