About The Position

Under the direction of the Weights and Measures Director, the Weights and Measures Deputy Inspector conducts inspections of all weighing and measuring devices and all commodities offered for sale by weight and measure within Allen County and the City of Fort Wayne limits. This position is Covered as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED and at least one year of experience within an inspection field
Ability to pass written test for approval and appointment by the State as an Inspector of Weights and Measures
Ability to obtain and maintain appointments as Inspector of Weights and Measures through the Board of Public Safety
Ability to obtain special Police Commission through the Board of Public Safety
Valid Indiana Driver’s License to operate County vehicles and perform on-site inspections
Working knowledge of all federal, state, and local rules, regulations and laws concerning proper use and maintenance of weighing, measuring, and timing devices
Practical knowledge of various scales, sensitivity requirements, and ratio (load) tests and the ability to operate and maintain electronic, computerized, and mechanical testing equipment
Ability to read scales of all types, scanners, and labels
Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly communicate with business and the public about violations and inspections
Strong computer skills, with the ability to use Microsoft Office and other job-related software

Responsibilities

Enforces local ordinances and issues citations and fines for Weights and Measures violations.
Performs regular on-site inspections and testing of all weighting, measuring, and timing devices at various business sites, including but not limited to, motor fuel dispensers, retail sales, and wholesale and industrial metering systems.
Maintains accurate records of inspections and reports, noting items tested, discrepancies found, action items, intentions for follow-up verifications, and proprietor’s signature.
Receives and responds to complaints and inspection requests from the general public in a timely manner, conducting on-site inspections to verify and/or resolve violations.
Performs random checks of pre-packaged goods, weighing packages to verify reported weight, checking tare allowances, and reviewing labels to assure complete and accurate compliance.
Understands and applies State and local laws concerning Weights and Measures.
Maintains detailed inspection of equipment and vehicles, including cleaning and arranges maintenance and repair.
Prepare letters, memos and reports as directed.
Attend training and seminars as required and necessary.
Performs all other duties as assigned, including overtime as required.
