About The Position

The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center at Gallaudet University is a federally funded center with exemplary elementary and secondary education programs for deaf and hard of hearing students. It is tasked with developing and disseminating innovative curricula, instructional techniques, and products nationwide while providing information, training, and technical assistance for parents and professionals to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing students from birth to age 21. The Residential Night Assistant ensures the safety, security, and well-being of students during overnight hours at the dorm, including monitoring dormitory activities, responding to emergencies, and providing support to students as needed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of one year of experience with student services, activity planning, or a related field (Bachelor’s degree with some experience in the above-mentioned area will be considered).
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.
  • Must possess and submit current First Aid and CPR certificates at time of hire, or obtain them, or be re-certified in them by attending the Clerc Center Student Life Training Institute held in August of each year.
  • Must possess valid authorization to work in the United States.
  • Must be able to work overnight on Friday and Saturday nights.
  • Must undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to students’ needs and concerns throughout the night; provides a supportive presence for students, addressing any issues that arise and offering assistance as needed; and coordinates latenight check-ins and ensures students adhere to curfew policies.
  • Conducts regular rounds of the dormitory to ensure the safety and security of the building and its occupants; monitors security cameras and alarm systems; and enforces dormitory rules and policies to maintain order and discipline.
  • Responds promptly and effectively to emergencies, including medical issues, safety concerns, and other urgent situations; follows established protocols for emergency situations and notify appropriate personnel as required; and documents and reports all incidents and emergencies to the supervisor.
  • Maintains clear and open communication with other residential life staff, including passing on information about any incidents or concerns that occur during the night; ensures accurate handover to daytime staff, providing detailed reports of overnight activities; ensures that parents are kept informed, involved, and supported when issues concerning their child arise.
  • Monitors students’ well-being, addressing any health concerns or emotional issues that arise during the night; and coordinates with school counselors and healthcare staff as needed.
  • Maintains accurate records of student attendance, incidents, and any other relevant information; assists with check-in and check-out procedures for students arriving late or leaving early; and ensures dormitory spaces are secure and clean, reporting any maintenance or housekeeping issues.
  • Fosters a positive and inclusive dormitory environment; builds rapport with students, encouraging a sense of community and mutual respect; and supports and participates in dormitory activities and events as needed.
  • Enforces residence hall rules and regulations and enforces the code of conduct; and follows-up with student consequences when infractions occur.
  • Provides for the attractiveness of the dorms; decorates the dorms for special activities and events; and ensures that dorm rooms and common areas are clean and maintained at all times.
  • Attends team and staff meetings; prepares and submits regular reports to the supervisor, including incident and daily log reports; and compiles confidential and statistical reports.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.
  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.
