Web Research Specialist

Turing•Pittsburgh, PA

About The Position

Turing is hiring a Web Research Specialist to help build an evaluation benchmark for frontier AI browsing agents. The role focuses on designing research problems that state-of-the-art AI systems cannot solve, even with full web access and multiple attempts. It is investigative research rather than a subject-matter-expert or content-writing role. The specialist starts from a verifiable fact and works backward to construct a question that is difficult to answer, then documents a complete, auditable evidence trail. Deliverables include a natural-language research question with a short, stable, objectively verifiable answer; independently checkable clues spanning multiple fact types and including specific constraints; and a validation record describing obvious searches performed and their results. Evidence documentation is the majority of the work. This is an 8-week contractor assignment requiring 40 hours per week, including at least four hours of overlap with Pacific Time. The assignment does not include medical or paid leave. Applicants complete an assessment, which the team evaluates before contacting selected candidates about next steps.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated open-web research ability, including locating primary records and navigating government and institutional databases, archives, registries, and PDF documents.
  • Precision with sourcing, including citations to exact pages, tables, and sections rather than only homepages.
  • Comfort researching unfamiliar subjects from scratch.
  • Native or near-native written English.
  • High tolerance for structured documentation.
  • Experience with LLM evaluation, red-teaming, or benchmark construction.
  • Commitment of 40 hours per week with at least four hours of Pacific Time overlap.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with JSON and structured data delivery formats.
  • Experience in reference librarianship, archival research, or special collections.
  • Experience in investigative journalism or professional fact-checking.
  • Experience in OSINT, due diligence, KYC, or investigative research.
  • Experience in patent, prior-art, or legal-discovery search.
  • Experience in genealogy and records research.
  • Experience in competitive quizzing or puzzle-hunt construction.

Responsibilities

  • Design research problems that challenge state-of-the-art AI browsing agents, starting from a verifiable fact and working backward to construct a difficult question.
  • Create natural-language questions with short, stable, objectively verifiable answers.
  • Develop independently checkable clues spanning multiple fact types, including dates, people, places, organisations, works, events, records, and quantities, with specific constraints.
  • Locate and cite primary records and navigate government and institutional databases, archives, registries, and PDF documents.
  • Build a complete, precise, auditable evidence trail, citing exact pages, tables, and sections.
  • Create validation records showing the obvious searches performed and the results returned.
  • Complete the application assessment.
