About The Position

The Watershed Construction Maintenance Worker II performs semi-skilled construction and/or maintenance work in support of the wastewater collection system and/or the water distribution system for the Department of Watershed Management in the division of Linear Infrastructure Operations. The Watershed Construction Maintenance Worker II is a lead role operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, as well as hand and power tools, to ensure the safety and optimal functioning of the operation. This role may also entail substituting for supervisors when necessary and assisting other crews as required. Functions as a lead worker for semi-skilled construction and/or maintenance work in support of a wide variety of drinking water or distribution systems activities. Operates hand and power tools, light to medium construction equipment, etc. Generally, works as a part of a work crew, but may work independently or act as a lead worker on a crew in standard linear pipeline infrastructure construction or maintenance. Work is performed frequently in cooperation with skilled trade employees, experienced equipment operators, technicians, or crew supervisors. Supervision Received: Works under direct supervision and follows standardized procedures and written/verbal instructions to accomplish assigned tasks; may assist in training, orienting, or observing lower.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • 2 years of experience in construction, and wastewater collection systems or water distribution systems
  • State of Georgia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B
  • Knowledge of department policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of general site safety as it pertains to water operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of methods, products, tools and equipment used in water maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematical principles.
  • Skill in operating a variety of light to heavy power equipment (backhoe, excavator, vactor truck)
  • Skill in maintenance of tools and equipment (pumping equipment, hydraulic excavator, concrete socket)
  • Ability to understand and apply pertinent policies, procedures and regulations
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted during the course of work
  • Ability to perform maintenance activities involving skills in the functional fields to which they are assigned
  • Ability to maintain records and make simple reports
  • Ability to work beyond normal working hours, as required
  • Ability to trouble shoot as it pertains to heavy equipment (water mains)
  • Ability to communicate diplomatically with customers to successfully address concerns
  • Ability to adapt to changes in work environment
  • Ability to document work status with photos and data input

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Utilize Georgia Commercial Driver's license for operating vehicles and heavy equipment
  • Draft detailed reports documenting inspections, task completions, and recommendations for maintenance activities, as needed.
  • Ensure safety at work areas by setting up necessary precautions to protect the public and flagging traffic for crew safety.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections on equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety standards.
  • Take vehicles for refueling, transport containers to the landfill for disposal, and facilitate vehicle maintenance as needed.
  • Assist Crew Supervisor I’s & II’s with their duties to support overall operations.
  • Completes assigned work orders in an efficient and effective manner; works with supervisor to perform water infrastructure work assignments; works in a safe and organized manner to ensure safety for self, crew and the public and to complete assignments correctly and on time.
  • Works as part of a work crew as the senior crew member to inspect maintain and repair water mains; place flags or cones to control traffic in case of a water main break, make taps on water mains, install, maintain and repair water service laterals, fire hydrants and valves; perform corrective and preventative maintenance on water mains and related appurtenances, perform limited utility locating or water service connections, water mains and sewer lines as necessary.
  • Diagnose the causes of cave-ins and operate equipment such as Vactors and hand rods to remove blockages from service lines.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of records such as daily reports, work order notations and utility locating of water service connections, water mains and sewer lines as necessary.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of records such as daily reports, work order notations and utility map (plat card) revisions.
  • Checks utility trucks to ensure that proper equipment and tools are present and in working order; requests approval for necessary materials to complete assigned work orders.
  • Maintains a safe and organized work area; stores tools; collects scrap and leftover materials; blows debris from sidewalks.
  • Additional duties may include operation of the crew truck and truck equipment, valve turning (on valves 12-inches and smaller), fire hydrant flushing, application of water main disinfectant solution and meter installation when necessary.
  • Attend safety classes and meetings to stay updated on safety protocols and regulations.
  • Assist law enforcement in removing loaded weapons or other hazardous materials from catch basins.
  • Aid the public in retrieving personal items, such as keys, cell phones, and tablets, from catch basins.
  • Substitute for supervisors during their absence, assuming leadership responsibilities, as necessary.
  • Assist other crews as needed, collaborating with colleagues to accomplish departmental goals.
  • Ensure the safety and optimal functioning of the operation utilizing heavy equipment, such as dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders.
  • Attend safety classes and meetings to stay updated on safety protocols and regulations, promoting a culture of safety within the workplace.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.
