Water Wastewater Project Engineer - Structures

RK&K•Baltimore, MD
•Hybrid

About The Position

RK&K is seeking a highly motivated Structural Project Engineer to join its municipal infrastructure team. The role involves structural analysis, design, and delivery of water and wastewater facility structures—including treatment plants, pump stations, and liquid-retaining structures—as well as building-type and related municipal infrastructure structures. The engineer will own structural design scopes, lead technical tasks, and collaborate across disciplines from project concept through construction. The position also offers opportunities for technical leadership, client interaction, and staff mentoring. The engineer will help lead structural engineering efforts on multidisciplinary projects, develop contract documents, assess existing infrastructure, and provide construction-phase support. Responsibilities include design of new and existing structures and foundations; preparation and quality review of calculations, plans, specifications, and construction documents; coordination with other engineering disciplines; site investigations and condition assessments; development of reports, repair recommendations, and cost estimates; and monitoring assigned scope progress and budgets. The position is hybrid, with work from home and office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with a structural focus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • At least 4 years of structural engineering experience, focused on environmental and building-type structures.
  • Proficiency applying IBC, ASCE 7, ACI 318, ACI 350, AISC 360, and TMS 402/602.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis and design software such as STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, or RAM.
  • Strong understanding of lateral load paths, including wind and seismic loads, and liquid-retaining concrete design.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and task management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • 7 years of consulting engineering experience.
  • Experience with treatment plant expansions and structural concrete rehabilitations.
  • Experience with masonry, aluminum, or stainless-steel design.
  • Structural Engineering (SE) license or interest in pursuing one.
  • Familiarity with Revit or BIM workflows.
  • Experience assisting with proposals or technical statements of work.
  • Active participation in professional societies such as ASCE, SEI, or ACI.

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis and design of existing and new reinforced concrete, masonry, steel, stainless steel, and aluminum structures, including shallow and deep foundations.
  • Prepare structural design calculations, plans, specifications, and construction documents for municipal water and wastewater projects.
  • Perform quality control reviews of design deliverables prepared by design engineers, drafters, and REVIT modelers, ensuring compliance with building codes, environmental concrete standards, and client requirements.
  • Own routine structural design tasks independently and collaborate with senior engineers on complex or specialized systems.
  • Coordinate structural systems with process, geotechnical, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering disciplines to resolve spatial, loading, and environmental constraints.
  • Participate in project progress meetings and assist in preparing technical materials.
  • Provide construction-phase technical support, including reviewing shop drawings, responding to RFIs, and conducting field observations.
  • Conduct site investigations, condition assessments, forensic evaluations, and structural condition inspections of existing facilities and structures.
  • Develop engineering reports, repair strategies, and recommendations for deteriorated environmental structures.
  • Prepare engineering construction cost estimates.
  • Track progress and monitor hours and budgets for assigned structural scope items.
  • Assist in developing project scopes and budgets.
  • Mentor junior engineers through design tasks.
  • Maintain Professional Engineer licensure and pursue ongoing professional development.
