About The Position

The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is accepting online applications for a Water/Wastewater Maintenance Mechanic II with the Water & Sewer department. The employee performs difficult skilled mechanical work related to repair and servicing of a large variety of equipment used at pump stations, water and wastewater treatment plants. This includes plumbing, electrical, and carpenter work, as well as welding (gas and electrical) and metal fabrication. This is skilled work in the installation, repair, general, and preventive maintenance of plant equipment, machinery, and facilities at the municipal water or wastewater treatment plants or pumping stations. Work involves responsibilities for participating in the maintenance and repair of equipment, machinery, and related appurtenances at the water or wastewater pumping and treatment plants. Assignments are determined by the breakdown of machinery and equipment; however, routine work is performed with little direct supervision. Technical assistance is readily available for help on unusual or difficult problems. The work is reviewed through inspections and by observations of results.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the construction, assembly and maintenance of all equipment used at water and sewer pumping stations and water and sewer treatment plants.
  • Thorough knowledge, skill and ability to weld with gas or electric.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and repair such equipment.
  • Ability and knowledge to pass a plumbing, electrician and welding test if the City requires one.
  • Ability to interpret service and repair manuals.
  • Ability to detect by inspection any worn, missing, broken, mismatched or wrongly adjusted parts.
  • Ability to do all types of carpenter work, plumbing (new and old), and electricians work (new and old) including troubleshooting.
  • Ability to give cost estimates of jobs when needed.
  • Ability and knowledge to use the proper tool to do the job with good physical condition.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Completion of high school or its equivalent.
  • Considerable experience in maintenance of water and sewer equipment.
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and ability to perform in this position.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and repairs equipment at pump stations (water, booster and sewer lift stations) water and sewer plants.
  • Supervises small groups of workers from time to time.
  • Diagnoses, troubleshoots and repairs electrical problems and malfunctions.
  • Reads and works from blueprints.
  • Performs welding (gas and electrical).
  • Repairs and replaces old and new plumbing (all types).
  • Repairs speed reducers, blowers, electric motor controls, air compressors, small gas engines, weed eaters, gear boxes, electric motors, vacuum pumps, all types of water pumps, lawn mowers, heat pumps, all types of lab equipment, and performs all types of metal fabrication.
  • Installs new and used equipment.
  • Paints equipment and buildings.
  • Performs carpenter work, framing and finished work.
  • Keeps records of work performed.
  • Checks water and sewer pump stations for proper operation.
  • Orders supplies and parts for the job.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
