About The Position

Assists Water Plant Superintendent, Water Plant Foreman, and Lead Operator(s) with plant operations, records management, and reporting in accordance with state health department and federal EPA regulatory requirements. Assists operator staff with complex technical issues, operational set points, and troubleshooting. Supervision Received: Public Works Director, Water Treatment Plant Superintendent, Water Treatment Plant Foreman. Supervision Exercised: Lower-level personnel as assigned. FLSA Status: Non-Exempt.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemistry, Excel spreadsheets, and process on-line instrumentation.
  • Ability to make accurate readings, keep records, and perform regulatory reporting.
  • Ability to take verbal and written instructions.
  • Meets qualifications of Water Plant Operator.
  • Some knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with the water plant and related activities, and of necessary safety precautions.
  • Ability to work according to a prescribed routine and to remain alert through long periods of time.
  • Ability to take accurate readings, to keep routine records, and to make arithmetic computations.
  • Skill in the use and care of hand and bench tools.
  • Must have a North Dakota Water Plant Operator certification at time of hire, or have the ability to obtain within 1 year.
  • Must have a valid North Dakota driver's license.
  • Must be insurable under the City’s motor vehicle insurance policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferably including courses in chemistry, biology, and related subjects.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain regular reports and communications with regulatory agencies, as assigned.
  • Assist the WTP Superintendent and Foreman in ensuring all WTP operations meet regulatory requirements.
  • Perform analysis of operational set points to ensure efficiency of operations.
  • Assist with the production and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures and related operations manuals.
  • Assists with training and orientation for new and existing employees, maintains proficiency with technology and equipment as updates occur.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding water quality, taste, and odor concerns.
  • Perform duties as Water Plant Operator as needed or at the direction of the Supervisor.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Liaison with PLC/SCADA/IT activities.
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
  • The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion.
