About The Position

The Town of Hopkinton is seeking a Water Technician to join our Water & Sewer team. This is a hands-on position for someone who enjoys working outdoors, solving problems, operating equipment, and doing work that directly supports the community. The Water Technician helps maintain Hopkinton’s public water distribution system and plays an important role in ensuring the reliable delivery of high-quality drinking water to residents and businesses. Working under the direction of the Water & Sewer Manager, the Water Technician performs skilled and semi-skilled work associated with the operation, maintenance, installation, and repair of the Town’s public water distribution system. The work includes maintaining and repairing water mains, services, hydrants, valves, and related infrastructure; assisting with water sampling and testing; operating equipment and tools; responding to water system emergencies; and interacting with residents and customers in the field. This is a position where mechanical aptitude, good judgment, teamwork, and a willingness to learn matter. We’re looking for someone who can troubleshoot problems, work safely and independently, and contribute as part of an experienced Water & Sewer team.

Requirements

  • One (1) to three (3) years of experience in public works construction and maintenance, including experience in the operation of a public water distribution system; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with coworkers and the public.
  • Possession of a valid 2B Hoisting License (required).
  • Possession of a valid Class B CDL (required).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience reading plans and blueprints.
  • Experience maintaining records.
  • Experience using computers.
  • Experience performing water sampling and testing.
  • Possession of Drinking Water Distribution License (preferred).
  • Possession of Drinking Water Treatment License (preferred).
  • Candidates who otherwise meet the qualifications for the position and are willing and able to obtain the required licenses within six (6) months of hire will be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs water mains, services, hydrants, valves, and related infrastructure.
  • Assists with water sampling and testing.
  • Operates equipment and tools.
  • Responds to water system emergencies.
  • Interacts with residents and customers in the field.
  • Responds to emergency calls during and after normal business hours.
  • Available for On-Call Rotation for after-hour emergencies and weekend station checks.
