About The Position

Performs a variety of semi-skilled construction, service and repair functions involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of water service equipment and pipelines. Employees in this class inspect, maintain, repair, install and replace water meters, mains, valves and hydrants and operate automotive and mechanical equipment normal to these work activities. Employees in this class are distinguished from a lower class by their skills and ability to work independently; and to coordinate the worksite in the absence of a Water Serviceman III or Foreman. Requirements

Possession of a High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent AND two (2) years experience as a Water Service Worker I in the Compton Municipal Water Department, or three (3) years of laboring experience in a Water Utility System.
Must possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License.
Possession of a Water Distribution Operator Grade I Certificate or higher from the State Water Resources Control Board.
Considerable knowledge of operation and maintenance practices of a water supply and distribution systems.
Considerable knowledge of methods of using materials and tools for the installation and maintenance of pipes, mains, meters, filters, and related equipment.
Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to water system repair and maintenance work.
Basic mathematics, including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
Basic codes and regulations applicable to performing repair and maintenance work in a public agency.
Ability to direct work of subordinate employees.
Ability to tap water mains and make water service connections.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions
Ability to maintain records
Ability to make water service repairs.
Ability to read and record water meters.
Ability to write reports
Ability to keep neat and accurate records.

Nice To Haves

Ability to obtain a Grade 1 Water Treatment Operator Certification from the State Water Resources Control Board within 24 months from date of hire is desirable
Ability to obtain a Class B Driver’s License within 18 months of hire.

Responsibilities

Direct and assist with the installation of mains and hydrants.
Prepares trenches, installs pipelines, water service and fire hydrants.
Lays pipe to grade, applies coating and wraps pipe.
Backfills, floods, tamps and applies temporary resurfacing to street excavations.
Makes excavations with backhoe.
Locates and checks gate valves.
May clean and maintain reservoirs and other Water Department facilities.
Assists in the maintenance and repair of water meters and other equipment.
Operates a light truck, backhoe with loader, pneumatic tools and similar equipment.
May read, check and repair water meters.
Participate in after-hours stand-by duty and answers emergency calls.
