About The Position

The Water Resources Intern will join an engineering team supporting stormwater management, drainage, and floodplain projects for municipalities, counties, and other public-sector clients. Projects range from small drainage improvement studies to large-scale watershed and floodplain analyses supporting community resilience and public infrastructure. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply hydrology and hydraulics coursework to real-world public infrastructure projects. As a Water Resources Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards while assisting Senior Engineers in the preparation of hydrologic and hydraulic models, drainage reports, and floodplain studies. The intern will build foundational proficiency in the modeling software used throughout the water resources engineering practice.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate Civil Engineering program or related field of study.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions, including near waterways and drainage infrastructure, on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Nice To Haves

  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in water resources or hydraulic engineering.
  • Experience with technical software including HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, EPA SWMM, or other relevant modeling tools.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the development of hydrologic and hydraulic models to support drainage design and floodplain analysis.
  • Use AutoCAD Civil3D, HAC-RAS, and other H&H software to prepare and check working drawings, details, layouts, and estimates.
  • Support preparation of stormwater management reports, drainage studies, and permit application materials for public agency review.
  • Help review as-built drainage infrastructure and GIS data to inform watershed and conveyance analyses.
  • Develop an understanding of client interests and help identify approaches to address client concerns in the performance of project work.
  • Actively coordinate with internal and external team members across public infrastructure projects to ensure effective communication and project progress.
  • Travel to project sites as necessary to gather field data and interface directly with clients and public agency staff.
