About The Position

The Water Quality Technician is a skilled position responsible for performing routine chemical, physical, and bacteriological analyses on water and source water. Work involves collecting non-regulatory samples, performing laboratory and field analyses at various locations in the water treatment facility, the water distribution system and areas within the watershed. The incumbent participates as needed in special projects and process support programs. Tasks include basic laboratory analysis on the day-to-day required tests using established policies, procedures and technical guidelines, data entry into internal reports and software, and sample collection using proper procedures. The salary range for this position is $25.76 - $36.07 per hour with a hiring range of $25.76 - $30.92, depending on qualifications and experience. This opportunity will be available to applicants by invitation only. This position is a non-benefited part-time position for five hours a week, up to three (3) month max. Requirements

  • 4 year/bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science or related field.
  • 1 year of experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must possess a basic knowledge of the scientific method, laboratory procedures, and a working knowledge of laboratory mathematical operations.
  • Must have familiarity with Microsoft office products and laboratory software.
  • Consistently and reliably collect and process environmental samples and perform assigned basic microbiological, wet chemistry, and instrumental analyses.
  • Work in a team-oriented environment to monitor the quality of the City's treated drinking water and support treatment operations projects and activities.
  • Attend meetings, conferences, and training sessions to keep current with changes in regulatory and industry protocols as assigned.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of hazards and safety precautions required in the laboratory and field.
  • Utilize data management software.
  • Demonstrate integrity and build trust through credibility, reliability, commitment, and ethical behavior.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic understanding of the water treatment process is desirable.
  • 2 years of experience in a water municipal or commercial laboratory.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure safety of public health and environment by demonstrating compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Perform basic analysis on water and source water samples by strictly following prescribed analytical methods and established protocols.
  • Perform limited regulatory work under the oversite of Supervisor, Scientist II and/or Scientist I.
  • Comply with all applicable quality control protocols to provide legally defensible analytical results.
  • Enter data into internal laboratory reports and software to be reviewed by Scientist I, Scientist II, and Supervisors.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory and field instrumentation and equipment.
  • Participate in source water monitoring programs, including sample collection and analysis.
  • Notify Supervisors and appropriate personnel of all “out of range” results.
  • Assist with process support projects as needed.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and adhere to all established safety protocols.
  • Responds to plant operations staff questions.
  • Update chemical inventory.
  • Perform basic laboratory cleaning and maintenance.
  • Deliver and/or ship samples as needed.
  • May be responsible for purchasing basic laboratory supplies or services, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
