About The Position

Conducts beginner American Sign Language (ASL) cohort training for City employees to support initiative related to accessibility, inclusion, and effective communication with Deaf and hard-of-hearing community members. Responsibilities include curriculum development, instructional delivery, cohort facilitation, participant engagement, and evaluation of learning outcomes for adult learners. This opportunity will be available to applicants by invitation only. You must receive an invite to be considered for this position. This position is a non-benefited part-time position under 30 hours per week, up to six (6) month max.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • 2 Years teaching or facilitating instruction for Adult Learners.
  • 2 Years demonstrated proficiency and fluency in American Sign Language.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 Year/Associate Degree: Education, Deaf Studies, ASL Interpretation, Communication, or related field preferred.
  • 1 Year Experience developing instructional materials, lesson plans, or curriculum for group learning environments.
  • 1 Year Experience teaching beginner-level ASL.
  • 1 Year Experience facilitating workplace, municipal, or customer service-focused training.
  • 1 Year Experience supporting diverse adult learning styles and abilities.
  • ASL teaching certification, interpreter certification, or related credential preferred.
  • Proficiency using virtual meeting platforms and presentation technology preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver customized ASL training modules and workshops for adult learners in a cohort-based learning format.
  • Facilitate one (1) kickoff session to introduce program expectations, learning objectives, instructional materials, and cohort norms.
  • Deliver eight (8) progressive instructional sessions focused on foundational ASL communication skills.
  • Work with City staff to create teaching outlines and determine instructional methods based on participant and organizational needs.
  • Pair participants with practice partners (“buddies”) to encourage continued learning and accountability between sessions.
  • Select or develop instructional materials, visual aids, handouts, learning activities, and practice assignments to reinforce learning.
  • Provide participants with supplemental learning resources, including recommended books, videos, and independent learning materials.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of instructional sessions and modify curriculum or instructional methods based on participant feedback and engagement.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as attendance tracking, participant communication, session preparation, class evaluations, and printing instructional materials.
  • Maintain an organized and professional classroom environment before, during, and after instructional sessions
  • May provide up to one additional hour per week of optional supplemental instruction or participant support based on interest and availability.
  • Encourage participation in optional community-based ASL practice opportunities to support continued skill development.
  • May provide virtual or hybrid ASL instruction utilizing web conferencing software such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams.
  • May assist with identifying additional accessibility and communication resources for employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
