About The Position

The Department of Environmental Services, Environmental Quality Division is hiring for a Water Quality Technician II at Sand Island Water Quality Lab in Honolulu. This position performs marine water column and sediment collection activities, in-situ analyses, collection of ocean circulation data, outfall inspections, and other related field collection work.

Requirements

  • Citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Two years of experience in collecting and analyzing oceanographic, laboratory or related data.
  • Valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.
  • Valid basic SCUBA certificate, at time of application.

Responsibilities

  • Perform collection and in-situ analyses of marine water column samples; sediment samples by dredge or diving; elected species of fish and marine organisms for toxics bioaccumulation and whole effluent toxicity bioassays.
  • Conduct fish and coral reef surveys using transecting methods and Remotely Operated Vehicles.
  • Perform activities related to the collection of ocean circulation data, such as the deployment of current meters and drogues and dye to testing of plume dispersion.
  • Perform diving inspections of the City's ocean outfalls and other marine discharges.
  • Transport samples to City laboratory for processing.
  • Operate a city-owned vehicle, trailer, boat, testing equipment, fishing gear, sampling equipment, and SCUBA gear.
