The City and County of Honolulu (City), Department of the Corporation Counsel , Litigation Division is looking for a responsible, detail-oriented legal clerk who works well under pressure and is eager to contribute their legal support skills while working under pressure on some of the most high-profile legal defense cases handled by the City. This is a great opportunity for an organized and proactive professional to strengthen their legal clerical and administrative skills while contributing to the success of the City’s legal defense team.

Requirements

  • Citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Two years of clerical work experience, one of which must have been legal clerical work involving the preparation, typing and processing of a variety of legal forms and documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms and documents.
  • Familiarity with legal terminology, legal documents, and court-related procedures.
  • Experience preparing, processing, proofreading, and organizing legal forms, records, and correspondence.
  • Strong file management and recordkeeping practices, including maintaining legal case files and tracking case information.
  • Proficiency using word processing software and computer systems to input, update, retrieve, and manage information.
  • Strong attention to detail, grammar, spelling, and document accuracy.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills when working with attorneys, court personnel, witnesses, defendants, City employees, and the public.
  • Professional judgment and tact when explaining processes, procedures, and policies.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience managing multiple assignments while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Typing proficiency at a rate of 40 net words per minute.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with e-filing legal documents
  • Familiarity with litigation procedures, Rules of Court, service requirements, and court calendaring deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, proofread, edit, and finalize legal forms, pleadings, contracts, correspondence, reports, and related legal documents.
  • Manage e-filing, maintain court calendars, track deadlines, and coordinate scheduling.
  • Establish, organize, and maintain legal case files, records, and case status information.
  • Assist attorneys with trial and hearing preparation by compiling records, gathering documents, and preparing case-related materials.
  • Maintain witness lists, prepare and track subpoenas, and coordinate travel arrangements for witnesses as needed.
