About The Position

The City of Marquette is accepting applications for a Water Plant Supervisor. This position carries with it the responsibilities of the drinking water supply for the City of Marquette and Marquette Township and the implications of not maintaining a safe and adequate supply of that water. To best meet this goal the Supervisor may work in a swing shift rotation to keep aware of what may be going on during other shifts, and to keep those he supervises up to date on what happens during other shifts, and with other departments. Works under the supervision of the Director of Municipal Utilities. Maintains direct supervisory responsibility for Water Treatment Plant Operators, and any temporarily assigned Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators as needed.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of water treatment operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of state and federal drinking water regulations.
  • Possess skills in planning, organizing and directing workforce.
  • Required knowledge includes high school education and minimum of three years’ experience in Water Treatment Facility.
  • An EGLE F-1 certification is required within one year.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Computer and maintenance skills required. Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel and other City software used in the Department.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of the Water Plant and all related equipment
  • Schedule the work of a crew and provide assistance as needed. Conduct and oversee a variety of laboratory tests and interpret results.
  • Enforce safe work practices established by the City, State and Federal Regulatory Agencies
  • Monitor water quality and take necessary action to assure compliance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Handle personnel activities in accordance with pertinent contract provisions and good supervisory practices.
  • Maintain operating records and prepare reports on plant operation as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Direct the maintenance program for all plant equipment.
  • Maintain supply of water treatment chemicals, laboratory supplies, and spare parts inventory.
  • Assist in training Water Plant staff with various aspects of plant operations and maintenance.
  • May be called upon to conduct facility tours and presentations, and perform limited public relations as necessary.
  • Control costs through good operational and maintenance practices.
  • Maintain MSDS log and Right-to-Know Program.
  • Coordinate operation/maintenance activities with outside contractors and aid the Director in monitoring their performance.
  • Ensure proper laboratory standards to maintain laboratory certification.
  • Monitor status of Water Plant Operators’ certifications.
  • Assist in the development of safety programs and policies.
  • Assure that the required chemical and bacteriological monitoring is being done according to schedules established by the regulatory agencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
