About The Position

This position is responsible for the operation of the well field, water treatment plant, and storage tanks, ensuring the City of Gladstone receives safe drinking water and adequate water pressure for firefighting. The role involves performing quality control tasks, maintaining records, and general upkeep of equipment, buildings, and grounds. The operator will also assist with special projects in various Public Works areas and is required to be on-call, responding to emergencies within 30 minutes. Fostering a positive and respectful work environment is also a key aspect of this role.

Requirements

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Missouri for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain state certification as a MO-D Water Operator within 1-year of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs quality control tasks, including water lab testing, adjusting chemical feed rates, checking well-monitoring pumps, backwashing filters, and performing general maintenance.
  • Keeps logs, journals, and records of communications related to water.
  • Maintains equipment, building, and grounds.
  • Assists with special projects in Water, Streets, Sewer, Storm and other areas of PW.
  • Serves on-call every third week and more frequently as-needed, requiring a 30-minute response time.
  • Responds to emergency calls within 30 minutes, carrying a pager on a rotating basis that limits activity and travel.
  • Performs janitorial and housekeeping services.
  • Builds and maintains tactful, effective/positive working relationships with co-workers, other city employees, and the public.
  • Fosters and contributes to a work environment that supports and exhibits honesty, diversity, integrity, trust and respect.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance and punctuality.
