About The Position

This position is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of water meters, identifying and repairing water leaks, maintaining meter-related tools and equipment, and responding to the needs of the public. The role involves maintaining, testing, and repairing water meters in the field and the Meter Shop, identifying and repairing water service line leaks, and installing and changing out water meters. The technician will also locate and raise buried meter boxes, replace old meter boxes and lids, and turn water service on or off as requested. They will acquire current meter reads, respond to customer concerns regarding high bills, taste and odor, chlorination, or air in water lines, and assist in the installation and repair of large diameter pressure reducing valves. Additionally, the role includes installing and monitoring water sample stations, repairing water main breaks and service leaks on-call with Water Distribution, and maintaining regular and punctual on-site attendance. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must have or obtain a valid Class D Water Distribution License from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) within 12 months of employment.
  • Must have or obtain a valid Class I Wastewater Collections Operator License from TCEQ within 12 months of employment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to be a self-starter and work independently.
  • Must be able to work with technology to complete work orders.
  • Must be able to work effectively with minimal supervision.

  • Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License and valid state required minimum automobile liability insurance prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license and state required minimum automobile liability insurance within 90 days of hire per state law).
  • Must be able to obtain a Class “A” CDL with Tanker endorsement within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, and social security number verification check.
  • Must pass a physical examination.
  • Must be able to work overtime when requested and on-call as needed.
  • Must respond to after-hours emergency calls.
  • Must have good communication, reading and writing skills.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in all kinds of weather conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior plumbing or waterworks experience
  • TCEQ Class D Water Distribution License
  • TCEQ Customer Service Inspector (CSI) License

Responsibilities

  • Maintains, tests and repairs water meters ranging from ¾” to 10” in the field and Meter Shop.
  • Identifies water service line leaks to make the necessary repairs on the City side of the meter or communicates to the customer of leaks on the private side of meter.
  • Installs and changes out water meters ranging from ¾” to 2”.
  • Locates and raises buried meter boxes for Meter Reading to gain access.
  • Replaces old meter boxes and lids.
  • Turns water service on or off as requested by the customer or Water Meter Shop.
  • Acquires current meter reads as requested by the customer, Water Metering or Customer Service.
  • Responds to customer concerns such as high bills, taste and odor, proper chlorination or possible air in the water lines.
  • Assists in the installation and repair of large diameter pressure reducing valves.
  • Installs and monitors water sample station locations and records all data.
  • Repairs water main breaks and service leaks on-call with Water Distribution.
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
