About The Position

This position assists with all aspects of the Water Department to ensure safe drinking water, water production, treatment, storage, and distribution. The role involves ensuring compliance with EPA and Safe Drinking Water Act regulations, assisting with the backflow program, water meter reading, public education on water resources, daily water quality testing, and residential water connects/disconnects. The employee will also participate in public outreach, operate large trucks and heavy equipment, perform general maintenance on Water Department buildings, and assist with researching and developing departmental policies and procedures. The role requires participation in local and state initiatives, knowledge of safety policies, preparing and maintaining records, effective communication, and responding to inquiries and complaints. The position includes serving on-call for emergencies, operating a motor vehicle, and adhering to Town Council established rules and procedures.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must have and maintain a verifiable Indiana Driver’s License.
  • A demonstrated safe driving record.
  • Must remain insurable through the Town’s liability insurance carrier.
  • Basic knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling, punctuation.
  • Ability to understand information from various sources to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to utilize computer technology such as calculators, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be able to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of goals.
  • Must have a safe work record with good ethics and dependable attendance record.
  • Experience in operating equipment to include pumps, motors, water tanks, chemical feed equipment.
  • Must be able to understand basic concepts in performing lab testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized training in Water Quality methods or related field.
  • Two years of experience may substitute for specialized training.
  • Maintain a verifiable Indiana Class B (airbrakes) Commercial Driver’s license.
  • Experience in SCADA systems.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with ensuring compliance with EPA, Safe Drinking Water Act, and other regulations for water quantity and quality, operating practices, storage, and treatment principles.
  • Assist with implementing and enforcing the backflow program, and responding to related inquiries.
  • Assist with water meter reading activities.
  • Assist with public education on managing surface water and ground water resources.
  • Assist with testing and analyzing daily water quality samples.
  • Assist with residential water connects and disconnects.
  • Participate in public outreach efforts, including plant tours.
  • Operate large trucks and heavy equipment.
  • Assist with the general maintenance of all Water Department buildings.
  • Assist with researching, developing, implementing, reviewing, interpreting, and recommending changes to specifications, standards, policies, procedures, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
  • Participate in local and state initiatives, task forces, events, and professional committees.
  • Ensure proper operation and maintenance of department vehicles, equipment, and tools.
  • Assist with preparing and maintaining inventory, records, and reports.
  • Coordinate and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various stakeholders.
  • Assist with responding to inquiries and complaints regarding water and related areas, and initiate action to resolve valid complaints/requests.
  • Attend all required meetings and trainings.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding Town issues.
  • Serve 24-hour on-call for emergencies, including calling in personnel after work hours and monitoring utility-related emergencies, citizen notifications, and spill incidents.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the Department and the Town.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
