About The Position

The YMCA is seeking an experienced and motivated Water Fitness Instructor to lead safe, effective, and engaging water fitness classes at the Andover Branch. This part-time position involves adapting exercises for diverse participants, fostering community, and maintaining a safe and organized class environment. The role requires strong communication skills, a commitment to YMCA values, and the ability to work effectively with individuals of various backgrounds and abilities.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Current CPR, AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications required.
  • Current Water Fitness certification from a nationally recognized organization (AEA preferred) or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire.
  • YMCA Aquatic Safety Assistant certification (or ability to obtain within six months of hire).
  • Ability to effectively work with individuals of diverse ages, backgrounds, abilities, and fitness levels.
  • Strong communication, customer service, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to YMCA values and member engagement.
  • Ability to safely demonstrate water fitness exercises and techniques.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and move in and around the pool environment.
  • Ability to see, hear, and communicate effectively in a pool setting.
  • Ability to respond appropriately during emergencies and assist aquatic staff when needed.

Nice To Haves

  • One year or more of water fitness or group exercise instruction experience preferred.
  • Degree in Exercise Science, Physical Education, or a related field preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead safe, effective, and motivating water fitness classes following YMCA best practices.
  • Adapt exercises to meet participants' varying abilities, fitness levels, health conditions, and goals.
  • Build positive relationships with members and encourage participation and community engagement.
  • Promote water fitness programs to members and the community.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and organized class environment.
  • Set up, monitor, and properly store all class equipment; report damaged equipment as needed.
  • Maintain accurate attendance and program records.
  • Follow YMCA policies, procedures, and emergency action plans.
  • Assist aquatics staff during emergencies as directed.
  • Communicate class coverage needs and secure qualified substitutes when unable to teach assigned classes.
  • Attend required staff meetings, trainings, and certifications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
