About The Position

Under general supervision of the Water Distribution Field Supervisor(s), performs a variety of skilled water distribution crew activities in order to construct, maintain, and repair the Community’s domestic water delivery systems. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt and considered a DRIVING position subject to working on call and weekend hours.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED and one (1) year of full-time work experience in the construction, maintenance, and/or repair of underground wet utility systems.
  • Ability to pick up and move objects weighing at least 75 pounds for a distance up to 50 feet.
  • Ability to determine and use appropriate safety equipment and follow prescribed safety procedures/standards.
  • Ability to climb ladders or steps, and bend or stoop repeatedly or continually.
  • Ability to read plans, records and other data to provide appropriate locations of community underground assets (Blue Stake.)
  • Ability to communicate with members of the staff and the public both by using written and verbal methods.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
  • Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.
  • Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with a public or private utility system is highly preferred.
  • An ADEQ or ITCA Grade I Water Distribution Certification upon time of hire is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs, maintains, and installs new water distribution system components, including mains, service lines, meters, valves and fire hydrants.
  • Utilizes appropriate safety equipment and follows prescribed safety procedures in performing work assignments.
  • Under the direction of a Water Distribution Field Supervisor and/or Water Distribution Worker II, operates a variety of construction/power equipment including: backhoe, jackhammer, tamper, boring and tapping machines, used for installing, maintaining, and repairing water and wastewater lines to facilitate project completion.
  • Moves objects, tools, and equipment to load and/or unload and place equipment/material at job site with the assistance of hand carts, power winches, or rigging equipment.
  • Cleans work area, all hand and/or power tools, and/or equipment around excavation site for next use.
  • Manually excavates trenches and periodically exposes (potholes) underground utility lines to identify any possible dangers or obstructions to backhoe operation.
  • Backfills, compacts, and cold patches holes and trenches remaining after construction, maintenance or repair activity has been completed.
  • Shades, backfills, and compacts in conformance with established standard specifications for size and location of cut and type of fill material used.
  • Installs saddles, clamps, and other emergency repair devices, which may be required to stop leaks in water mains and services.
  • Installs, and assists contractors with the installation of, sewer lines and residential sewage disposal systems per approved plans as needed.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints to determine location of septic tanks and associated piping.
  • Maintains and repairs sewer lines as needed.
  • Reads and interprets plans and as-builts to locate Community utilities so they can be marked to help prevent and/or minimize accidental damage by contractors or other digging near the Community’s utility lines (Blue Stake Program).
  • Conducts research or analyzes data regarding excavation locations, construction prints, and plans to determine actual alignment of requested utilities.
  • Completes log to document work completed using computerized data entry.
  • Learns job-related material through on-the-job training regarding blue staking or marking of utilities.
  • Interprets signals and output from electronic detection equipment to locate underground utility lines.
  • Responds to emergency situations and performs other tasks and special assignments as required.
