This position is responsible for skilled and technical duties in the operation and maintenance of the City’s water treatment facilities, pumping facilities, remote well sites, water distribution systems, elevated water storage tanks, and sanitary sewer collection systems. Work involves responsibility for the daily operation and maintenance of water treatment plants, wells, high-service pumps, water distribution mains, water service lines, and associated apparatus such as fire hydrants, valves, water meters, and the cleaning, televising, and repair of the sanitary sewer lines. A non-supervisory position that reports directly to the Water & Sewer Utility Crew leader. This position is a full time on-site position reporting to the City of Batavia's Public Works building. A typical work schedule for this position is Monday to Friday 7:00 AM-3:30PM. This position will require on call availability for city emergencies. Residency within 16 miles of City Limits required within 1 year of employment.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school (or GED) including or supplemented by vocational courses in water supply and treatment.
  • Experience in work that provides a familiarity with the trades and equipment used in water/sanitary sewer collection operations; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public, even in adverse situations, and to convey concise and accurate information.
  • Skill in the use of a variety of tools and heavy equipment required by the work including the use of a backhoe and front-end loader.
  • Ability to recognize water quality problems and diagnose any malfunctions and take appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from schematics and maintenance manuals.
  • Ability to perform work safely, and follow all written and oral safety procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with others.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois Commercial driver’s license (CDL) within one year of employment (minimum Class B with air brake endorsement).
  • Possession of an IEPA Class D OIT (Operator in Training) Certification within 18 months of hire, and a minimum IEPA Class D Water Operators License within 30 months of hire.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain trench/shoring, confined space, IDOT Flagger and Traffic Control and Protection (TCP) certifications, NASSCO PACP, MACP, LACP certifications, or other certifications as assigned and directed by the Water and Sewer Utility Operations Manager or Public Works Administration.
  • Residency within a 16-mile radius of the furthest City of Batavia limit.
  • Ability to pass SCBA fit testing semi-annually.

Nice To Haves

  • Considerable knowledge of the operation and maintenance of municipal water production, treatment, distribution system, and sanitary sewer collection systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of general maintenance, operation, tools, and equipment necessary to sustain and improve the sanitary sewer collection system and the operations of wells, water treatment systems, and water main repairs preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects, maintains, and monitors pumps, filters, chlorine, fluoride, and phosphate injection equipment; maintains, repairs, and replaces valves, hydrants, and meters; adjusts chemical injection and water pumping equipment, as necessary.
  • Maintains compliance with Illinois Environmental Protection Agency standards; takes daily chlorine, fluoride, and phosphate analysis, and samples for water quality to meet all IEPA drinking water standards; prepares data for incorporation into the IEPA Monthly Operating Report.
  • Investigates complaints regarding water quality; repairs water mains and water service leaks; operate a backhoe and other vehicles and equipment used in the operation and maintenance of the underground water distribution system and sanitary sewer collection systems.
  • Utilize the water system Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor pressures, water storage levels, chemical feed pumps, dosage rates, temperatures, alarms, etc.
  • Installs and maintains water meters; repairs and replaces faulty meters; assists in meter reading, as necessary.
  • Locates underground water and sanitary sewer main and service lines; responds to J.U.L.I.E. locate requests.
  • Flushes, maintains, and repairs fire hydrants.
  • Performs various maintenance tasks at remote well sites
  • Observes pressure tests and collect samples for new water main installations.
  • Assists in routine cleaning, televising and repairing sewer mains and service lines
  • Restores roadways and parkways after maintenance and repair activities.
  • Performs other public works maintenance activities such as snow plowing, truck driving, and related work as needed; does preventive maintenance on city vehicles and equipment.
  • Safely operates vehicles and equipment; attends safety training programs.
  • May be called out on a year-round 24/7 basis

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
