About The Position

The Water/Sewer Utility Worker plays a critical role in maintaining and improving the infrastructure that supports safe and reliable water and wastewater services within communities. This position involves the installation, repair, and maintenance of water and sewer lines and manholes, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental regulations. The role requires working collaboratively with a team to respond promptly to service disruptions, emergencies, and routine maintenance tasks. The Water/Sewer Utility Worker contributes to public health and environmental protection by ensuring the proper functioning of water distribution and wastewater collection systems. Ultimately, this position supports the community’s quality of life by helping to provide clean water and effective wastewater management.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting heavy materials and working in confined spaces.
  • Basic knowledge of water and sewer system components and construction practices.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and flexible hours, including potential on-call shifts.
  • Technical skills daily to operate specialized equipment and perform precise repairs on water and sewer infrastructure.
  • Strong problem-solving skills are essential for diagnosing system issues and implementing effective solutions under time constraints.
  • Communication skills facilitate coordination with team members, supervisors, and sometimes the public to ensure smooth project execution and safety compliance.
  • Physical stamina and manual dexterity are critical for handling tools, materials, and working in challenging environments.
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and regulatory requirements ensures that all work is performed responsibly and in accordance with legal standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification in water or wastewater operations (e.g., Grade I or II Water Distribution or Wastewater Collection).
  • Experience operating heavy construction equipment.
  • Familiarity with safety standards such as OSHA regulations related to utility work.
  • Previous experience in a water or sewer utility or construction environment.
  • First aid and CPR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Perform installation, maintenance, and repair of water and sewer lines, valves, hydrants, manholes and related infrastructure.
  • Operate and maintain construction and maintenance equipment such as backhoes, trenchers, and pumps safely and efficiently.
  • Respond to emergency calls for water and sewer system repairs, including leak detection and blockage removal.
  • Conduct inspections and tests to ensure system integrity and compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and equipment maintenance.
  • Collaborate with team members and supervisors to plan and execute daily work assignments and projects.
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear appropriate personal protective equipment to minimize risk on the job site.
