The NYC Ferry Watchfloor monitors daily movements and operational aspects of the NYC Ferry System. Watchfloor staff provide operational oversight and serve as the internal communications hub during emergencies, keeping NYCEDC and City leadership informed of urgent or emergent situations. This part-time role supports the NYC Ferry Watchfloor as part of a four-person team. Operators work independently across two daily shifts and provide field-shift coverage as needed. Each shift includes checking in, actively reviewing and communicating system status, and submitting a close-out report. Shift schedules may vary to meet operational coverage needs. Morning shifts run from 5:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; evening shifts run from 2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Field shifts involve observing, assessing, and documenting conditions aboard ferries and at ferry landings. Field shifts are scheduled four times per week in spring and summer and twice per week during the rest of the year. Typical field shifts run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., last eight hours, and include a one-hour break. The role averages 20 hours per week during fall and winter (November–April) and 28 hours per week during spring and summer (May–October). Weekly hours may vary according to operational needs, and no fixed schedule is guaranteed.
