About The Position

The Watch Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of mechanical equipment in the building. This role involves monitoring and controlling various systems, performing repairs, and ensuring the efficient and safe operation of all equipment. The Watch Engineer will work closely with the Director of Engineering and may supervise assistant engineers and mechanics.

Requirements

Low-pressure license required.
Experience in boilers required.
Experience with pumps, compressor, plumbing, and copper piping required.
Knowledge of electrical experience in commercial refrigeration required.
Experience troubleshooting refrigeration equipment in kitchens and air handlers required.
Experience with thermostat controls, pressure gauges, and control valves required.
Experience in elevators, exhaust systems, grease traps, and steam traps troubleshooting and repair work required.
Basic knowledge of all power tools required.
Ability to climb, crawl, and work under pressure in demanding situations.
Not afraid of heights.
Ability to work in confined areas.
Ability to work in boiler room under extreme heat.
Understanding of basic evacuation procedures.
Ability to work closely with the director of engineering on day-to-day operations of mechanical equipment.
Ability to work flexible shifts.
Experience in chiller mechanics and HVAC.
Understanding of basic building construction.
Knowledge of rules and regulations according to building codes and fire safety.
High school or equivalent education required.
Must be able to push and pull carts and equipment weighing up to 250 lbs.

Nice To Haves

Previous experience in a hotel setting is desirable.
5 years of carpentry experience is desirable.

Responsibilities

Observe and interpret readings on gauges, meters, and charts to ensure boilers are operating properly.
Switch from automatic to manual controls and isolate equipment for safe inspection and repair.
Maintain daily logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities.
Monitor and inspect equipment, computer terminals, switches, valves, gauges, alarms, safety devices, and meters to detect leaks or malfunctions.
Analyze problems and take appropriate action to ensure continuous and reliable operation of equipment and systems.
Clean and lubricate boilers and auxiliary equipment, making minor adjustments as needed.
Perform or arrange for repairs, including overhauls, replacement of defective parts, or fabrication of new parts.
Operate or tend stationary engines, boilers, and auxiliary equipment to supply and maintain steam or heat.
Activate valves to maintain required amounts of water in boilers, adjust combustion air, and control fuel flow.
Test boiler water quality and take corrective action to prevent corrosion and deposits.
Adjust controls and valves on equipment to provide power and regulate operations.
Monitor boiler water, chemical, and fuel levels and make adjustments.
Weigh, measure, and record fuel used.
Install burners and auxiliary equipment.
Contact equipment manufacturers or specialists to resolve equipment problems.
Provide assistance to plumbers in repairing or replacing water, sewer, or waste lines.
Test electrical systems to determine voltages.
Develop operation, safety, and maintenance procedures.
Check the air quality of ventilation systems and make adjustments.
Investigate and report on accidents.
Receive instructions from steam engineers regarding steam plant and air compressor operations.
Supervise the work of assistant stationary engineers, operators, boiler tenders, or air conditioning and refrigeration operators and mechanics.
Operate mechanical hoppers and provide assistance in their adjustment and repair.
