About The Position

The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator performs semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and systems. The position works under the general supervision of the Wastewater Operations Manager and does not supervise other employees. The operator may provide backup and support at the Water Treatment Plant or DPW.

Requirements

High school graduation or GED equivalent.
Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in wastewater treatment plant maintenance and operations.
Working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices.
Skill in operating some of the listed tools and equipment.
Ability to perform process-control calculations.
Ability to work safely.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Possess a State of Michigan Class D Certification, or be able to obtain it within two years from the date of hire.

Responsibilities

Assist in operating and maintaining wastewater processing equipment.
Monitor equipment, gauges, and charts at the treatment plant and pump stations, and record statistical data about plant operations.
Maintain, operate, repair, and replace equipment as needed, including performing preventative maintenance on plant and lift station equipment.
Maintain records relating to inspections and maintenance activities.
Repair malfunctions at the wastewater treatment plant, including repairing gauges, pumps, filters, controls, and other equipment.
Collect and test wastewater samples for required chemical, physical, and biological characteristics and plant-efficiency reports.
Perform quality-control tests on laboratory equipment and analyses, evaluate procedures and results for accuracy, and determine appropriate methods.
Ensure the plant operates within required standards.
Contain and dispose of hazardous waste generated by the laboratory.
Calibrate, modify, or repair instrumentation and control equipment, including recorders, flowmeters, and water-quality monitoring equipment.
Operate and maintain sewage pump stations; clean wet wells and operate pumps and valves to control flow and the treatment process.
Perform duties in accordance with applicable safety and security standards.
Respond to complaints about wastewater system failures, leaks, or other problems; evaluate situations and make necessary repairs.
Contact residents and business owners when service will be discontinued and explain when it will be shut off and how soon it will be restored.
Serve on employee or other committees as assigned.
Maintain drawings and schematics of electrical and other treatment plant systems.
Monitor the performance of electrical systems, circuits, or equipment at the treatment plant.
Perform other duties as assigned.
