About The Position

The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) Operator I performs technical work in the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and spray irrigation fields, in accordance with the permit issued by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The operator assists with plant and equipment operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, irrigation scheduling, and related grounds and facility work. The position may involve irregular and extended hours, rotating on-call duty, and work during emergency or disaster situations.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED.
Experience in job-related skills such as electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical work, heavy machinery operation, lawn care, or landscaping.
Valid driver's license.
Obtain a North Carolina CDL Class B within one year of hire.
Complete FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 courses.
Ability to work well with others and independently.
Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant and spray irrigation system operating characteristics and maintenance requirements; hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical principles relevant to wastewater treatment; irrigation piping installation and repair; computer applications; occupational hazards and safety precautions; and the use and care of hand tools.
Skill in detecting mechanical equipment flaws and determining remedial measures; following moderately complex oral and written instructions; accurately reading meters and charts; maintaining operating records; and communicating effectively with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
Ability to represent the Town professionally and respectfully when interacting with diverse individuals in the workplace and community.
Ability to perform the described physical work, including heavy work exerting up to 250 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.

Nice To Haves

Experience in wastewater treatment or a related field.
North Carolina CDL Class B license at the time of hire.

Responsibilities

Assist other operators in the maintenance and operation of the Surf City wastewater treatment plant, including pumps, blowers, valves, piping, dissolved oxygen sensors, disc filters, the ultraviolet disinfectant system, and the surface irrigation facility.
Perform building and grounds maintenance.
Operate tractors, mowers, bush hogs, chainsaws, and other equipment used to maintain grounds and spray fields.
Monitor and adjust WWTP reactor set points to maximize treatment.
Consult with the supervisor and advise on the status of operations and repair activities.
Coordinate with other departments as needed.
Perform equipment maintenance daily, weekly, monthly, or as needed.
Schedule irrigation according to effluent flow rate, weather, and field conditions, distributing water responsibly and in compliance with state-permitted loading rates.
Procure and store materials and spare parts.
Perform laboratory duties as needed.
Troubleshoot problems and make routine or emergency repairs.
Work irregular hours, including weekends, holidays, and extended hours as needed, and serve on a rotating on-call schedule.
Perform work during emergency or disaster situations.
Perform other related duties as needed.
