About The Position

Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment facilities and systems. This role involves assisting in operating and maintaining processing equipment, monitoring performance, recording data, performing preventative maintenance, and making necessary repairs. The operator is responsible for collecting and testing wastewater samples, performing quality control tests, and ensuring the plant operates within required standards. Additionally, the role includes operating and maintaining sewage pump stations, responding to system failures, and communicating with residents and business owners regarding service disruptions.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED equivalent
  • Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods, and procedures used in wastewater treatment plant maintenance and operation activities
  • Working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices
  • Skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment
  • Ability to perform process control calculations
  • Ability to work safely
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions
  • Minimum of State of Michigan Class D Certification or the ability to obtain within two years from date of hire

Responsibilities

  • Assist in operating and maintaining a variety of wastewater processing equipment.
  • Monitor the performance of all equipment, gauges, and charts in the treatment plant and pump stations.
  • Record statistical data concerning plant operations.
  • Maintain, operate, repair, and replace equipment as necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repairs on plant and lift station equipment.
  • Maintain records relating to inspections and maintenance activity.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair malfunctions at the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Repair gauges, pumps, filters, and other controls and equipment.
  • Collect wastewater samples and identify chemical, physical, or biological characteristics.
  • Gather and test wastewater samples for plant efficiency reports.
  • Perform quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analyses.
  • Evaluate procedures and results for accuracy and determine appropriate methods.
  • Ensure the plant operates within required standards.
  • Contain and dispose of hazardous waste generated by the lab.
  • Calibrate, modify, or repair instrumentation and control equipment.
  • Operate and maintain sewage pump stations.
  • Clean wet wells and operate pumps and valves to control and adjust flow and treatment process.
  • Perform all duties in conformance to appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Respond to complaints regarding wastewater system failures, leaks, or other problems.
  • Evaluate situations and perform necessary repairs.
  • Contact residents and business owners regarding service discontinuation and restoration.
  • Serve on various employee or other committees as assigned.
  • Maintain drawings and schematics of electrical and other systems in the treatment plant.
  • Monitor performance of electrical systems, circuits, or equipment of the treatment plant.
  • Provide back-up and support at Water Treatment Plant or DPW.
