About The Position

This job posting outlines three distinct roles within the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) operations for the Water Utility Services Department: Wastewater Plant Apprentice, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I, and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II. These roles involve a combination of basic, semi-skilled, and skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and monitoring of WWTP facilities and associated systems. Responsibilities include assisting in plant operations, monitoring equipment and process control systems, performing maintenance and adjustments, collecting samples, maintaining records, operating various lab and mechanical equipment, and responding to emergencies. The roles progress in responsibility, with Operator I capable of operating the plant without supervision and Operator II also responsible for training apprentices and handling more complex situations with minimal supervision.

Requirements

  • H.S. Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued Class D Wastewater Treatment License within 180 Days (Apprentice)
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued Class C Wastewater Treatment License within 1 1-2 years (Apprentice)
  • 1 year of WWTP operations and maintenance experience (Operator I)
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued Class C Wastewater Treatment License (Operator I)
  • 3 years of WWTP operations and maintenance experience (Operator II)
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality issued Class B or Class A Wastewater Treatment License (Operator II)

  • 6 months of WWTP operations and maintenance experience (Apprentice)

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the overall operation of WWTP facilities and equipment.
  • Performs work in accordance with all quality standards, safety regulations and procedures.
  • Observes and monitors WWTP equipment and process control system.
  • Cleans, maintains and adjusts equipment and components to meet WWTP specifications.
  • Collects samples and checks equipment to verify proper operating conditions.
  • Maintains records of services performed.
  • Performs operations and inspections of wastewater treatment plants and facilities as directed.
  • Monitors, adjusts, and documents plant operations to meet job specifications and technical codes.
  • Checks equipment to verify proper operating conditions and identify maintenance needs.
  • Receives and unloads chemical or manifested waste hauler loads.
  • Troubleshoots treatment issues and communicates to supervisors.
  • Operates various WWTP lab and mechanical equipment, including city vehicles, heavy equipment, forklifts, lawnmowers, screens, dewatering equipment, hand tools and power tools, filters, mop, buffer, spray painter, grease gun, and various office equipment.
  • May be required to respond afterhours, including holidays and weekends, in the event of a departmental or City-wide emergency.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
