About The Position

The City of Colton has an immediate opening for a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I or II. This recruitment will be used for current and future vacancies. Depending on qualifications, candidates may be hired at a level I or II. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I is an entry-level position under direct supervision, performing semi-skilled and limited skilled maintenance duties and operating power-driven equipment. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator II is a journey-level position under general supervision, performing and leading skilled maintenance duties, independently handling complex tasks, and potentially providing training to lower-level operators. Both positions may require working holidays, evenings, weekends, and being on call for 24-hour shifts.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience performing operations, maintenance and construction of wastewater production, water treatment and storage facilities (for Level I).
  • Two (2) years of experience performing operations, maintenance and construction of wastewater production, water treatment and storage facilities (for Level II).
  • Possession of a valid California Class "C" driver's license and good driving record.
  • Possession of a valid Grade I State of California Water Resources Control Board Wastewater Treatment Operator Certification within 12 months of hire (for Level I).
  • Possession of a valid Grade II Treatment Operator Certificate issued from the State of California Water Resources Control Board (MUST UPLOAD TO APPLICATION TO BE CONSIDERED FOR LEVEL II).
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of wastewater treatment plant operations.
  • Knowledge of functions and operations of pumps, motors, engines and other mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of operation of heavy plant equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations concerning the functions, operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment facility.
  • Knowledge of basic procedures for the proper handling and processing associated with bio-solids and effluent disposal.
  • Ability to assist in and perform the daily operations of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment in the course of performing routine maintenance and operational procedures.
  • Ability to perform laboratory testing and sampling as directed.
  • Ability to collect wastewater samples as needed.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to make arithmetical calculations as needed.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships in the workplace.
  • Ability to work standby, per the MOU after successful completion of probation and obtaining the required certification and experience.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to use power and noise producing tools and equipment.
  • Ability to drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Ability to work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions.
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions.

  • A Grade II Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate issued from the State of California Water Resources Control Board (for Level I).
  • A Grade III Treatment Operator Certificate issued from the State of California Water Resources Control Board (for Level II).

Responsibilities

  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and limited skilled maintenance duties and activities within the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
  • Operate power-driven maintenance and construction equipment.
  • Perform and lead skilled maintenance duties and activities.
  • Independently perform a variety of highly skilled maintenance activities relative to assigned area of responsibility.
  • Provide training and direction to Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I and In-Training classes (for Level II).
  • Perform daily operations of wastewater treatment facilities.
  • Operate heavy equipment in the course of performing routine maintenance and operational procedures.
  • Perform laboratory testing and sampling as directed.
  • Collect wastewater samples as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records.
  • Make arithmetical calculations as needed.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders, vactor truck.
  • Operate hand tools.
  • Use computer equipment as needed.
  • Effectively operate a motor vehicle on City streets.
  • Operate computer and applicable software.
