About The Position

The Wastewater Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operations, maintenance, and compliance of the Allen Harim wastewater treatment plant and related facilities. This position supervises wastewater personnel, coordinates daily work activities, monitors plant performance and treatment processes, ensures compliance with applicable environmental requirements, and responds to operational challenges and emergencies.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalency diploma recognized by the State of Delaware.
  • Valid Delaware Wastewater Operator Certifications
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in wastewater treatment plant operations, with supervisory or lead experience preferred.
  • Successful completion of an accepted Laboratory Testing and Analysis course offered by Delaware Technical Community College;
  • Excellent knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, practices, and equipment used in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant and potable water treatment systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles of bacteriology, biology, chemistry and physical examination of wastewater as they relate to wastewater analysis.
  • Knowledge of the practices used and the equipment required in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; skill in the operation and care of laboratory apparatus equipment, pumps, valves, and related mechanical and electrical equipment; skilled in the performance and interpretation of laboratory tests and procedures; ability to understand and follow technical instructions;
  • Ability to supervise and motivate team members in a team-oriented environment.
  • Possess superior interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises, trains, schedules, and evaluates wastewater operators and assigned wastewater personnel.
  • Monitor plant performance and system operations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations.
  • Support emergency response efforts for system failures, weather events, or hazardous conditions.
  • Recommend improvements to procedures and assist in implementing safety and efficiency initiatives.
  • Ensure safety procedures and policies are followed by all staff.
  • Perform and interpret laboratory tests and the analysis of wastewater at various stages of treatment.
  • Sampling for 11 potable water faucets located in the Harbeson Processing Plant.
  • Sampling for 5 stages of treatment and final effluent for the wastewater treatment plant.
  • Performs physical examinations of untreated and treated wastewater for suspended and per cent solids.
  • Performs chemical oxygen demand (COD) tests on both untreated and treated wastewater.
  • Performs chemical tests on treated drinking water samples for phosphate, zinc, copper and pH.
  • Performs nitrite, ammonia as nitrogen, total phosphorus, and alkalinity tests.
  • Prepares and standardizes chemical reagents for laboratory analyses.
  • Determines chlorine residual of plant effluent.
  • Starts and stops pumps, motors, air compressors, and related machinery and equipment.
  • Records readings from meters and gauges.
  • Investigates and responds to operational concerns and complaints.
  • Responds to emergencies, system failures, weather events, hazardous conditions, and other situations affecting wastewater operations.
  • Ensures safety procedures, policies, and required personal protective equipment are followed by all assigned personnel.
  • Inspects and monitors the performance of contractors when assigned.
  • Coordinates with management and other departments regarding wastewater operations, maintenance needs, safety concerns, and operational issues.
  • Recommends improvements to wastewater procedures, processes, safety practices, and operational efficiency.
  • Participates in special projects and recommends operational goals and objectives.
  • Provides coverage and assumes responsibility for wastewater operations in the absence of the Wastewater & Environmental Manager, as assigned.
