About The Position

The City of Wilmington is seeking an experienced and dependable Wastewater Plant Operator II to join our team. This position plays a key role in operating and maintaining the City’s wastewater treatment facility, ensuring compliance with all local, state, and federal environmental regulations. This position is a classified, non-competitive role as approved by the Civil Service Commission on September 16, 2025, classifying Wastewater Operator I–III as non-competitive classified positions for both hiring and promotion.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid Ohio Driver’s License and insurability under the City’s insurance plan.
  • Ohio EPA Class II Wastewater Operator License required at time of appointment.
  • Must obtain an Ohio EPA Class III Wastewater Operator License within three (3) years of appointment.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of wastewater treatment experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays as scheduled.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, laboratory testing procedures, and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with SCADA systems and operational reporting.
  • Ability to identify operational issues and act quickly to resolve them.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and documentation skills.

Responsibilities

  • Operate and regulate pumps, valves, and other essential plant equipment to support treatment processes.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports related to plant operations, including EPA-required documentation.
  • Conduct process control and lab analysis in support of NPDES permit compliance.
  • Serve as backup Operator of Record for the wastewater plant and/or collection system as necessary.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of tanks, pumps, motors, lift stations, and vehicles.
  • Perform housekeeping and grounds maintenance, including mowing and snow removal.
  • Notify supervisors when chemicals are needed and assist with monitoring and sampling equipment.
  • Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance.
  • Respond to emergencies outside of regular working hours as needed.
