Under direct supervision, the Waste Management Sorter collects residential and commercial refuse on designated routes and assists in completion of all routes; and performs related duties as assigned. The Sorter is responsible for ensuring proper placement and sorting materials on the conveyor line by performing the established duties.
Requirements
- Eighth (8th) grade completion

- at least three months related experience
Responsibilities
- Heavy manual labor, working as part of a crew in the collection and disposal of garbage, refuse recyclable material, yard trash and other waste materials
- Use pitchforks, shovels and similar hand tools to perform waste, recyclable, and yard trash pickup at garbage disposal areas of commercial, residential, and other designated locations
- Assist truck driver in fueling and checking all fluid levels of assigned truck, including spares
- Clean out the trucks, including cab interior on a daily basis upon the completion of route
- Inspect materials and sort items or materials into piles or places in container according to type, size, condition, coloring or paper grade
- Pull contaminants out of paper or off of floor
- Stack boxes and skids. Dump boxes and totes of material
- Feed material, such as wastepaper onto conveyor
- Clean up conveyor and surrounding sorting line. Keep surrounding work area clean
- Read monitor for machine start up and ensure machine is operating properly and at a moderate speed
- Follow appropriate standard operating procedures (SOPs) as guideline for operating and maintaining equipment
- Report any worker-public safety factors and/or equipment malfunctions
- Attend weekly/monthly safety/operations meetings
- Other duties as assigned
