About The Position

Help bring the City’s 25-year Waste Strategy to life through frontline, door-to-door education to support the apartment and condo transition to food scraps and recycling sorting. Reporting to the Outreach Coordinator, you will be part of a team of Waste Outreach Educators who educate residents on their doorsteps. This role works almost exclusively in the afternoons, evenings, and occasionally on weekends. This position is ideal for enthusiastic individuals with a background in education or customer service who thrive when interacting with the community and can professionally manage difficult conversations.

Requirements

  • Completion of the first year of a recognized Recreation Administration or related diploma or degree program
  • One (1) year direct experience leading recreational, cultural or related educational programs
  • Experience working with the general public, either in an educational or customer service setting
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing to citizens, including comfort with door-to-door canvassing and passion for speaking with the general public and educating them on various City initiatives
  • Skilled in presenting, organizing and supervising group presentations
  • Ability to adapt a script to meet the needs of the customer using active listening techniques
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks while delivering a high standard of customer service
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships that reflect a respectful and inclusive style
  • Ability to work independently with confidence, and stay positive while navigating difficult interactions
  • Ability to take direction and work independently to meet desired outcomes
  • Ability to manage multiple and changing priorities
  • Skill in the use of Google Workspace (Forms, Docs, Gmail)
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) security clearance that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton and is a requirement of this position, there may be a cost associated with this requirement

Responsibilities

  • Conduct door-to-door educational outreach and collect data; this occasionally includes interacting with residents who may have varied opinions, are unreceptive, or are currently facing challenges adopting new waste sorting habits
  • Answer questions about waste services, share information, educational tools, materials and strategize with residents to help empower them to properly sort and dispose of their waste
  • Visit apartment and condo residents year-round, working both indoors and outdoors in various weather and environmental conditions
  • Help residents overcome barriers related to food scraps and recycling sorting while asking for a commitment to changing waste sorting behaviour
  • Communicate respectfully and inclusively with members of the public, team members, other waste services program areas and supervisors
  • Use online data mapping software to record statistical information, conversation outcomes, waste sorting behaviour commitments, and other relevant data
  • Closely follow safety procedures and practice self-care while working independently in the field
  • Act as ambassador for Waste Services and represent Waste Services in a positive, diplomatic, and professional way
  • Call and act as a point of contact for property managers or other building staff. Answer questions, and elevate concerns to the appropriate parties if necessary
  • Coordinate building access to apartments and condos with the property manager
  • Provide regular status updates and reports to Outreach Coordinators regarding canvassing supplies, technological assets, leased vehicles and field conditions
  • Perform other related duties as required
