About The Position

The Waste Management Operator (WMO) I is responsible for the operation of heavy equipment in support of division activities including garbage and trash collection and hauling. This position can either be assigned to construction/demolition (C&D) and vegetative debris or Municipal Solid Waste (MSW). The role involves operating scow trucks and other department heavy trucks/equipment for debris collection or rear-loading garbage trucks for MSW collection, potentially leading a crew. Responsibilities include safe and efficient collection, performing equipment inspections and basic maintenance, interacting with the public, ensuring the use of personal protective equipment, and conducting safety training.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year prior work experience
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License Class B
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance of heavy equipment and effective practices and techniques
  • Knowledge of department safety practices and techniques
  • Knowledge of various department tools and equipment
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in written form
  • Ability to follow directions and complete tasks in a detailed and accurate manner
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Operates scow trucks and other department heavy trucks/equipment to collect C&D and vegetative debris from assigned routes throughout the Town.
  • Operates rear-loading garbage trucks to collect MSW from assigned routes throughout the Town. Responsible for leading and managing a crew of collectors.
  • Collects C & D and vegetative debris or solid waste throughout the Town in a safe and efficient manner following assigned routes.
  • Reports to and follow directions from WMO III or other supervisor(s) to complete assigned routes.
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections and basic routine light maintenance on heavy equipment such as greasing fittings. Responsible for equipment cleanliness.
  • Safely operates heavy equipment while near vehicles, structures, and people.
  • Collects materials or roll-carts off the street in a neat and tidy manner. May be required to sweep/broom as necessary at collection points.
  • Keeps supervisor(s) abreast of all pertinent issues pertaining to equipment, personnel, and routes.
  • Assists with training new employees to become familiar with job responsibilities.
  • Represents the Town and interacts with the public daily.
  • Utilizes and ensures crew use personal protective equipment and always follows safety instructions/ guidelines.
  • Conducts employee safety training as required.
  • May work with other crews and teams to complete assigned routes.
  • Performs other duties as required
