This summer engineering internship is part of Duke Energy’s Waste and Groundwater Programs group within its Environmental, Health, and Safety organization. The group supports compliance with state and federal environmental requirements related to waste management, coal combustion residuals, groundwater monitoring, and corrective-action programs at generating facilities. Interns may assist environmental professionals with reviewing and managing analytical and compliance data; preparing reports, plans, procedures, and regulatory submittals; evaluating monitoring results; and coordinating with laboratories, site personnel, consultants, and regulatory agencies. Other assignments may involve waste characterization and disposal, records reviews, permit and regulatory assessments, and continuous-improvement initiatives. The role focuses on office-based technical work and may include interaction with state and federal agency representatives. The 2027 program offers opportunities at locations across Duke Energy’s footprint in North Carolina, South Carolina, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, and Florida. The internship session lasts 10–12 weeks. Many opportunities require a 40-hour work week. Work may be hybrid or onsite, and some positions may require travel to project sites, a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, personal protective equipment, and the ability to meet site access or security requirements. Duke Energy describes itself as a Fortune 150 company and one of the largest electric power holding companies in the United States. Its mission includes supporting reliable, affordable, cleaner energy and transitioning electricity generation to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
