Serves as waste engineering support to waste generators and represents Waste Management in technical tasks involved in the management of legacy, current, and future production program wastes. Provides direction for the generation and management of high-volume and complex production low-level wastes, mixed low-level wastes, and hazardous wastes in addition to weapon material and weapon-related material in accordance with all relevant local, state, and federal regulations. Assists generators in the development of waste management plans and characterization of wastes. Ensures waste packages are suitable for shipment in commerce to an appropriate receiving facility prior to acceptance into Waste Management storage. The position will support Production waste-generating activities and requires a thorough understanding of regulatory, commercial, and site command media requirements not limited to 10 CFR, 40 CFR, 49 CFR, DOE Order 435.1 and various Waste Acceptance Criteria, translating these procedures and regulations into actionable guidance for waste generators and other operations personnel performing waste management functions. Well versed in waste characterization, treatment, packaging, transportation, and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities, a Production Waste Engineer oversees the “cradle-to-grave" lifecycle of all production waste streams and supports readiness and technological maturation of all new production and R&D processes as a representative of Waste Management. Candidate will spend 50% of time in support of field activities that will include climbing ladders and stairs, with the balance performing administrative duties. Occasional respirator use may be required.
