About The Position

Provides technical support and performs work related to waste characterization and disposal, including weapons and weapons-related material to meet waste management and mission related objectives. Some key activities involved include: Developing/reviewing sampling plans Supporting physical, chemical and radiological characterization for waste and weapons material for generating across the site in production and project related scopes of work May include subcontract management – especially for off-site treatment/disposal facilities Supporting NNSS waste certification program by providing technical support Supporting development of Technical Basis Documents (TBDs), Due Diligence documentation, and Process Knowledge (PK) summaries for Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facility (TSDF) profile submittments Evaluating radiological surveys to support radiological characterization Developing waste profiles Interfacing with internal and external customers, outside contractors, regulators and peers from other sites to resolve issues and complete work related to waste management, transportation and waste characterization Supporting waste management non-destructive assay (NDA) operations and program. The position focuses on waste characterization and technical support for waste management, transportation and waste treatment and disposal related activities. A working understanding of these processes requires knowledge in areas of math, chemistry, biology and regulations pertaining to waste management. Schemes for characterization, treatment, packaging, transportation, and disposal of waste generated at Department of Energy nuclear facilities are developed by personnel filling this position to support mission-critical work across the site.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree: Minimum 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Master's degree: Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.
  • In addition, the applicant must meet the requirements of DOE O 426.2A (i.e., Baccalaureate in engineering or related scientific major, 2 years job-related, and 1-year nuclear experience; or a DOE O 426.2A alternative).
  • Twelve or more years of relevant education, training, and/or progressive experience may be considered to satisfy educational and years-of-experience requirements for this posting.
  • Requires a Q clearance; however all qualified candidates will be considered regardless of their current clearance status.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy Q clearance is required.
  • This position may require entry into the Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 C.F.R. Part 712), which requires successful competition of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation and may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
  • This position may be categorized as a “designated position” identified by 10 C.F.R. Part 709, requiring successful completion of a DOE counterintelligence evaluation that may include a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with interpretation of analytical data, management of regulated waste types, understanding of health physics principles and identification/understanding of regulations pertaining to environmental compliance, radiological control, transportation and waste management related processes is critical.
  • Understanding waste acceptance criteria for various target waste treatment and disposal facilities is necessary.
  • Depending upon the specific position, understanding of subcontract management may be necessary.
  • Candidate should have familiarity with waste management requirements of Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), DOE 435.1 - Radioactive Waste Management, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and related Tennessee requirements.
  • Formal training related to radioactive waste management, DOT, RCRA, Polychlorinated Biphenyls, and Radiological Worker II is desired.
