About The Position

This position involves the care, custody, and control of inmates within the jail facility. Responsibilities include booking, searching, housing, and maintaining the security and welfare of prisoners. The role also requires transporting inmates, managing records, screening visitors, and responding to emergencies. The Deputy will monitor surveillance equipment, handle communications, attend training, and prepare various reports.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient
No felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature which would lend themselves to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, nor any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude
Minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment
Must hold or obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License
Ability to read, write and speak the English language as required by RCW 41.14.100
Must have a valid Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Corrections Officer Academy certification, a valid Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission Corrections Officer equivalency certification, or an equivalent valid corrections certification from a recognized and accredited Washington State academy and have the ability to obtain an equivalency certification within the first twelve (12) months of employment by meeting the standards of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission.
Have successfully completed the testing process and been hired by another jurisdiction from a civil service commission certified eligibility list or other like process.
Have at least 12-months continuous work experience and successfully completed any probationary period as a full-time, paid, Corrections Deputy with general corrections experience.
From the most recent corrections agency, must have no more than a 12-month break in service.
Pass an oral board to assess knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Must meet Thurston County Civil Service Pre-Employment Screening Standards.
Must meet the Sheriff's Office Employment Standards.
Must pass a background investigation by the Sheriff's Office, as well as a medical and psychological examination, and polygraph test.

Provide a copy of your DD Form 214 or NGB Form 22 with your materials as well as a completed Veterans Scoring Criteria Declaration if claiming Veterans' Scoring Criteria status.
If you do not have your DD-Form 214, provide a copy of your separation orders and a letter from your commander or S1 with your materials as well as a completed Veterans Scoring Criteria Declaration.

Responsibilities

Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and photographs incoming prisoners.
Issues jail uniforms, records and stores personal effects, and houses inmates by appropriate classification.
Maintains jail security by observation of inmates, pat searches, strip searches, and cell searches. Maintains orderly conduct and discipline.
Assures that inmates have access to basic needs for hygiene and welfare.
Prepares and delivers prisoners to court, doctors' offices, hospitals, and other locations. Transfers prisoners to and from jail and court.
Releases prisoners by established procedures or bail, court order, or other authority.
Logs court disposition of cases. Writes reports and maintains files.
Screens and processes visitors. Processes personal property brought to inmates and released.
Assigns and directs work of trustees. Distributes meals to all inmates, assuring that all materials are removed from cells after meals.
Advises superior when medical attention appears necessary and maintains physical safety of prisoners. Administers prescribed medications.
Monitors video and audio surveillance equipment and other job-related equipment.
Receives incoming telephone calls to the department, relaying them as appropriate. Communicates appropriately on the telephone.
Attends training and shift meetings. Applies job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities on duty.
Responds to and assists with major or minor disturbances, medical crisis situations, escapes, fire, and other natural disasters.
Prepares reports, memos, log book entries, and unit rosters. This is accomplished through handwritten, typed, and computer terminal entries.
Performs related work as required.
