About The Position

This position involves receiving, searching, booking, fingerprinting, and photographing incoming prisoners. The role includes issuing jail uniforms, recording and storing personal effects, and housing inmates based on classification. Maintaining jail security through observation, pat searches, strip searches, and cell searches is crucial. The deputy will ensure orderly conduct and discipline, provide inmates with access to basic needs for hygiene and welfare, and prepare and deliver prisoners to various locations such as court, doctors' offices, and hospitals. Responsibilities also include transferring prisoners to and from jail and court, releasing prisoners according to established procedures, logging court dispositions, writing reports, maintaining files, screening and processing visitors, and handling personal property brought to inmates. The deputy will assign and direct the work of trustees, distribute meals, and ensure all materials are removed from cells after meals. Additionally, the role requires advising superiors when medical attention is necessary, maintaining the physical safety of prisoners, administering prescribed medications, monitoring surveillance equipment, receiving and relaying telephone calls, and communicating appropriately via telephone. Attending training and shift meetings, applying job-related knowledge, and responding to disturbances, medical crises, escapes, fires, and other disasters are also key duties. Reporting is done through handwritten, typed, and computer terminal entries, including reports, memos, logbook entries, and unit rosters. The position performs related work as required.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient
No felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature which would lend themselves to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, nor any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude
Minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment
Must hold or obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License
Ability to read, write and speak the English language as required by RCW 41.14.100
Must pass a background investigation by the Sheriff's Office
Must pass a medical and psychological examination
Must pass a polygraph test
Must have a valid CJTC-recognized Corrections Officer Certification issued from another state-approved academy
Ability to obtain an equivalency certification within the first twelve (12) months of employment by meeting the standards of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission
Have successfully completed the testing process and been hired by another jurisdiction from a civil service commission certified eligibility list or other like process
Have at least 12-months continuous work experience and successfully completed any probationary period as a full-time, paid, Corrections Deputy with general corrections experience
From the most recent corrections agency, the applicant must have no more than a 12-month break in service
Pass a written examination
Pass a physical fitness test
Must meet Thurston County Civil Service Pre-Employment Screening Standards
Must meet the Sheriff's Office Employment Standards
