Under general supervision, maintains Court security and safety, and serves warrants and summons as a licensed Peace Officer for the Court. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) years of experience as a licensed Peace Officer.
  • Must be able to attain and maintain a Peace Officer's License and Courtroom Security Specialist Certification from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement within fifteen (15) months of employment
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Knowledge of City, county, state, and Federal laws, regulations, codes, and ordinances.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Texas criminal justice and court systems and the principles of criminal justice records management.
  • Knowledge of Law enforcement methods, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of Basic criminal law on the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including preservation and presentation of evidence.
  • Knowledge of Basic criminal law on the rules of evidence, probable cause, use of force, and search and seizure.
  • Knowledge of Investigative and interrogative procedures and research and protocols for observation of critical details.
  • Knowledge of Geography, roads, and landmarks of City and surrounding areas.
  • Skill in Exercising controlled discretion in situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, and sound judgment.
  • Skill in Recognizing suspicious behavior patterns, mediating difficult situations, and using effective arrest and control techniques.
  • Skill in Interacting with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Skill in Remaining alert at all times and reacting quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Skill in Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with City employees, other law enforcement and multi-jurisdictional agencies and the general public.
  • Skill in Care, maintenance and safe operation of a variety of law enforcement tools and equipment.
  • Skill in Operating a personal computer utilizing judicial and business software.
  • Skill in Effective communication, both verbal and written.
  • Skill in Providing effective on-the-job training, mentoring, and guidance to newly hired Warrant Officers/Bailiffs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides security for Municipal Court, looking for unusual or suspicious activities and persons.
  • Monitors all persons entering Court; screens visitors, and operates metal detectors to detect concealed weapons and hazardous objects.
  • Identifies dangerous and unstable persons and closely monitors their behavior in Court facility.
  • Serves as courtroom security officer, protects courtroom staff and visitors, and escorts jurors; investigates issues as directed by Judge and responds to emergencies.
  • Enforces governing state judicial and Federal laws, and enforces compliance with local regulations and ordinances, according to policies, procedures and regulations as applicable.
  • Prepares warrants; reviews court records and law enforcement databases to obtain and verify information on subjects wanted for Court appearances; researches additional data sources; updates records and databases.
  • Finds and contacts wanted subjects, conducts surveillance as required, serves summonses and warrants, arrests law violators as authorized, transports and processes prisoners.
  • Updates and maintains a variety of files, records, and other documents and prepares reports as required.
  • Assists and coordinates with other emergency services personnel, outside organizations and businesses, and Federal, state and local law enforcement organizations.
  • Provides on-the-job training and orientation to newly hired Warrant Officers/Bailiffs, ensuring consistent application of court policies, operational procedures, safety protocols, and applicable laws.
  • Maintains the integrity, professionalism, values and goals of the Department by assuring that all rules and regulations are followed, and that accountability and public trust are preserved.
  • Acts as a courier for judicial documents from and to Comal County facilities, the New Braunfels Police Department and New Braunfels Municipal Court.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
