About The Position

Beltrami County is creating an eligibility list for Bailiff I. The current opening is for a benefited, part-time position working 30 to 40 hours per week. Both females and males are encouraged to apply. Duties include guarding, supervising, escorting and transporting prisoners and providing security for the courts. Performs protective service work ensuring courtroom security, enforcing courtroom rules and regulations, guarding, supervising and transporting inmates, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Court Security Sergeant. Preferred hiring salary range is $26.08 to $ 28.50 per hour with a full range of $26.08 to $33.03 per hour. Placement depends on factors such as qualifications, internal equity, market conditions, and applicable policy guidelines.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Two years of full-time work experience; preference will be given for experience related to security, corrections, military police or other law enforcement and/or post-secondary education in the criminal justice field.
  • Valid MN driver’s license.
  • Thorough knowledge of courtroom security methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of courtroom rules and regulations; ability to use specialized law enforcement equipment as assigned; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports; ability to solve problems within scope of responsibility; ability to deal courteously but firmly with the public; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action; skill in the operation of motor vehicles; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, court personnel, inmates, and the general public.
  • Defensive Tactics, Basic Civil Processor, OC Spray/Taser certifications required within six months of hire.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certification required within six months of hire.
  • Employment offer contingent upon successfully passing drug screening, physical, background check, and psychological exam.

Responsibilities

  • Provides security to judicial building courtrooms; oversees inmates in courtrooms and holding areas; escorts inmates to court from jail, prisons, mental health facilities, or other facilities; guards inmates in medical facilities.
  • Provides security to those under court protection; maintains order and ensures security in courtrooms; segregates jurors from public, evidence, witnesses, and defendants; controls movement of jurors after selection.
  • Serves as officer of the court; acts as civil processor by serving judge's orders; ensures evidence and court documents at trial are secured; assists judge and court personnel in distributing court documents.
  • Remands people into custody upon order of the judge; pre-books those taken into custody; maintains records, verifies appointments, conducts civil and criminal fingerprinting and urinalysis, processes fees.
  • Inspects inmates, courtrooms, county campus and property; confiscates contraband; patrols county campus via camera and on foot.
  • Provides immediate medical attention to employees and public; notifies appropriate agencies for assistance.
  • Maintains security technology hardware; arranges maintenance and repair for transport and SWAT vehicles; manages impound lot vehicles.
  • Assists in screening public at public entry points to building.
