The purpose of the role is to provide strategic direction and guidance to assigned lines of business and functions in the US with respect to tax issues that are relevant and impactful. This role also involves providing second line of defense risk management support to the US business. The role liaises closely with tax peers in the global Tax team to ensure the delivery of business support and to provide timely and business focused tax advice. The role will also liaise with tax accounting and compliance personal in the US to ensure that the impact of transactions, changes in tax law, and other matters are correctly addressed in tax reporting and filings.

Requirements

  • Qualified tax professional: CPA with Masters in Tax or appropriate level of experience as substitute
  • Juris Doctor required
  • Proven corporate, international and operational tax law and accounting knowledge and experience
  • In house tax experience, preferably gained in a Financial Services institution (alternatively, in-house tax experience and FS Tax experience gained in a Big Four firm), with a functional understanding of the structural, capital and accounting issues that accompany it
  • Forward looking and business oriented, able to operate effectively and to prioritise competing demands combined with the ability to effectively influence and persuade all levels of management
  • Ability to translate complex tax/legal issues into clear, actionable advice for senior non-specialists
  • Strong stakeholder management skills; confident influencing across businesses and functions
  • Demonstrate experience in executing change/transformation programs within a Tax function with a particular focus on the use and adoption of technology to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of tax processes
  • High standing in the legal or tax profession and ability to represent fully and professionally the interests of HSBC business in industry and government bodies

Responsibilities

  • Support the Head of Tax in managing tax risk across all HSBC US entities, businesses and functions in line with HSBC’s strategy, risk appetite and applicable regulatory requirements
  • Provide legal oversight and challenge (as appropriate for a 2LoD function) to ensure tax positions are robust, well-governed and appropriately documented
  • Provide commercially minded legal advice to support effective planning that optimises the US Group’s tax position within risk appetite
  • Ensure tax consequences of HSBC’s geographic footprint, legal structure and business activities are understood by relevant stakeholders
  • Partner with Finance, Legal, Compliance, Risk and the Global Businesses/Functions to deliver pragmatic, timely advice that supports strategic priorities
  • Support representation and advocacy of HSBC on tax matters impacting the US and Group, influencing internal and external stakeholders on tax issues affecting Global Businesses and Global Functions
  • Prepare materials for, and contribute to, key Tax/Finance leadership teams and governance forums; ensure implications and recommendations are clearly understood and implemented
  • Supports the Head of Tax in setting consistent approaches across the region, balancing technical, regulatory and commercial considerations
