About The Position

Coast is seeking its first VP, People to build and lead the People function end-to-end. This role will oversee People Operations, Total Rewards, Talent (recruiting, performance, and career development), and Culture. The VP, People will partner directly with the executive team on organizational design, leadership development, and scaling the company, while ensuring the fundamentals of compensation, performance, compliance, and onboarding are managed effectively. This is a build role, transforming an existing foundation into a comprehensive people strategy that aligns with business growth. The position reports to the SVP of Operations and will lead a team including the Head of Talent, People Ops Lead, and a growing people team.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in People/HR roles, including experience leading a People function at a high-growth startup that has successfully scaled beyond Coast's current stage of maturity.
  • Track record designing compensation philosophy, pay bands, and equity strategy, and running comp cycles that scale with headcount.
  • Experience coaching managers through performance, promotion, and org design decisions, and building manager enablement programs where none existed.
  • Recruiting leadership: experience managing a recruiting team and building hiring processes that maintain quality as hiring volume increases.
  • Deep knowledge of employment law and HR compliance across multiple U.S. states, including New York.
  • Experience supporting a multi-site workforce with non-exempt and commissioned sales and operations teams outside headquarters, including sales compensation design.
  • Comfortable operating at the executive table with strong judgment, discretion, and the ability to influence without formal authority.
  • Strong analytical instincts, comfortable working with HRIS and compensation data to formulate recommendations.
  • High ownership mindset: ability to build processes where they do not exist.
  • New York City based; able to be in-office 3–4 days per week and travel to the Utah office at least once a quarter.

Responsibilities

  • Build and lead the People function, evolving People Operations into a full People organization with a scalable team, roadmap, and systems (HRIS, payroll, benefits administration).
  • Own the People budget and associated tooling decisions.
  • Hire, develop, and lead the People team as it grows.
  • Partner with leadership and the CEO on organizational design, headcount planning, and the people implications of major business decisions.
  • Coach managers on hiring, performance, promotions, and difficult conversations, and build a manager enablement program.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for leaders and teammates on complex people issues.
  • Design and manage performance review and promotion cycles, and develop career frameworks.
  • Build systems to proactively identify and address performance and engagement issues.
  • Lead recruiting efforts through the Head of Talent, overseeing hiring plans, processes, and candidate experience for both New York and Utah offices.
  • Partner with hiring managers to maintain a high hiring bar.
  • Design the company's compensation philosophy and pay bands, and collaborate with Finance on equity strategy.
  • Source and manage benefits, perks, and platforms to enhance employee experience.
  • Execute compensation cycles with rigor and fairness.
  • Partner with Finance, Sales, and Revenue Operations on sales compensation plans.
  • Maintain and evolve Coast's culture as the company grows.
  • Lead team events, office experience, and company traditions in both New York and Utah.
  • Administer engagement surveys and feedback loops, translating insights into actionable plans.
  • Ensure compliance with employment law across all operating states, including policy, records, and practices.
  • Build HR infrastructure (records, policies, processes) to support scaling and potential geographic expansion.
  • Manage worker classification, wage-and-hour compliance, timekeeping, overtime, and commission agreements.
