About The Position

Listerhill Credit Union is a financial cooperative whose primary purpose is to help our members live financially healthy lives. In 1952, seven Reynolds Metals employees deposited $5 each with the idea of starting a credit union that was member-owned and member-focused. Helping co-workers break from predatory lenders to borrow affordably and save for their financial futures was their motivation. We have grown from a single office at Reynolds Metals to serving members throughout northwest Alabama and south-central Tennessee, offering a full line of financial solutions. As the VP of Legal, you will provide advice and counsel on legal matters involving the credit union. You will be responsible for contract management and working with teams throughout the credit union to ensure legal risk is mitigated.

Requirements

  • Eight to 10 years of similar or related experience in a financial institution
  • Juris Doctor and bachelor’s degree
  • Licensed to practice law in the state of Alabama
  • Exceptional work and professional ethics and integrity

  • Detail-oriented and well organized
  • Adaptability in a fast-paced, highly regulated environment

Responsibilities

  • Review all third-party contracts and agreements binding on the credit union. Assist business owners in understanding contractual terms. Revise and negotiate third-party agreements with external parties to support the credit union’s position and business objectives.
  • Maintain vendor management program as an integral component of the vendor management team.
  • Support front-line, operational, and departmental teams in responding to everyday legal questions arising in a financial institution. Serve as point person for operational legal guidance and advice.
  • Work closely with the credit union’s compliance team on matters such as creating and editing forms, required disclosures, marketing materials, and other internal documents.
  • Provide assistance to the Loss Prevention team on bankruptcy, foreclosures and other related matters. Manage outside counsel used by Loss Prevention as needed to bring knowledge assets in-house.
  • Support commercial, mortgage, and retail lending teams, as well as loss mitigation and collection efforts on loan transactions, documentation questions, customer matters, issue identification, and general advice.
  • Manage response to garnishments, levies and subpoenas received from third parties, as needed.
  • Investigate or assist in the investigation of consumer and business complaints, administrative hearings, or actual or threatened litigation or claims against the credit union.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for issues relating to legal processes. Conduct research as needed to answer questions of first impression.
