About The Position

The VP of Consumer Loans & Mortgages provides strategic and operational leadership for the credit union’s consumer and residential mortgage lending functions. This executive is accountable for portfolio growth, profitability, credit quality, member experience, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence across the full lending lifecycle, including product development, origination, processing, underwriting, closing, funding, and portfolio management. The position develops and executes lending strategies aligned with the credit union’s strategic plan, leads cross-functional partnerships, and ensures that consumer and mortgage programs deliver sustainable growth while maintaining prudent risk standards and full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, investor requirements, and internal policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, finance, economics, or a related field is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible lending experience is required, including significant leadership experience overseeing both consumer and residential mortgage lending in a credit union, bank, or comparable financial institution.
  • Demonstrated experience with lending strategy, portfolio management, underwriting, operations, secondary-market or investor requirements, regulatory compliance, budgeting, and team development is essential.
  • Must maintain any registration or licensing required for the position, including NMLS registration when applicable.
  • Requires executive-level leadership, sound judgment, analytical ability, and the capacity to translate strategy into measurable results.
  • Must communicate effectively with senior leadership, the Board or applicable committees, regulators, auditors, vendors, employees, and members; influence across functions; manage competing priorities; lead through change; and handle confidential matters with discretion.
  • Strong financial analysis, portfolio reporting, negotiation, presentation, written communication, and technology skills are required.
  • Is able to bend, sit, and stand in order to perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 10 lbs.
  • Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in an emergency situation.
  • Must be able to operate routine office equipment including computer terminals and keyboards, telephones, copiers, facsimiles, and calculators.
  • Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary.
  • Must be capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.
  • Must be able to perform job functions independently or with limited supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team.
  • Must be able to read and carry out various written instructions and follow oral instructions.
  • Must be able to complete basic mathematical calculations, spell accurately, and understand computer basics.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes an integrated strategic plan for consumer and residential mortgage lending. Establishes production, portfolio growth, profitability, member-service, credit-quality, and risk objectives; evaluates market conditions; and recommends new or enhanced products, delivery channels, pricing, and promotional strategies.
  • Directs consumer lending programs, including personal loans and lines of credit, credit cards, direct and indirect auto lending, and other secured and unsecured products. Oversees underwriting, decisioning, fulfillment, funding, servicing coordination, collateral administration, and portfolio performance.
  • Directs residential mortgage lending, including origination, processing, underwriting, closing, funding, secondary-market or investor delivery, and portfolio lending. Ensures loans meet approved credit union standards and applicable investor, agency, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains sound lending governance and risk management. Recommends rates, underwriting standards, credit policy, approval authorities, risk models, concentration limits, and procedures; monitors delinquencies, charge-offs, exceptions, quality-control results, fair-lending indicators, and portfolio trends; and takes timely corrective action.
  • Leads, develops, and holds accountable lending managers and staff. Establishes goals and service standards; determines staffing and training needs; coaches performance; supports succession planning; and fosters a collaborative, compliant, member-focused, and results-oriented culture.
  • Optimizes lending systems, workflows, data, reporting, vendor relationships, and controls to improve efficiency and the member experience. Partners with Retail, Operations, Finance, Marketing, Compliance, Risk, IT, and other stakeholders; fulfills audit and examination requests; implements corrective actions; and exercises delegated loan approval authority as needed.
