VP, Communications

Function Health•Canada, KS

About The Position

Function Health is hiring a VP, Communications to build and lead our next-generation communications function from the ground up. This is a rare opportunity to shape how a category-defining health company shows up in the world — not through paid media, but by earning it. We're looking for a leader with a proven track record of keeping brands culturally relevant and top of mind over the long haul, with deep relationships across business press, cultural tastemakers, celebrity and influencer ecosystems, and the podcasters and YouTubers who now drive so much of the health and wellness conversation. You'll also own the full spectrum of corporate communications — from executive visibility and internal comms to navigating the specific credibility demands of medical and scientific communication — all in service of a consumer-first brand story. You will build and lead the team that makes this happen.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 15 years in communications leadership, with a track record of building and sustaining brand relevance through earned media over the long term.
  • Established relationships with business press, top-tier media, cultural tastemakers, and leading podcasters and YouTubers — relationships you can activate on day one.
  • Direct experience working with celebrity talent, influencer and creator teams (including podcasters and YouTubers), agents, and managers to build brand moments and partnerships.
  • Experience leading corporate, executive, and crisis communications at a high-growth or high-visibility company.
  • Comfort operating in a regulated, credibility-sensitive category (health, medicine, science, wellness, or similar) where accuracy and trust are non-negotiable.
  • A consumer-brand mindset — you think like a marketer as much as a communicator.
  • Experience building and leading a communications team and function from an early or evolving stage.
  • Exceptional executive presence and judgment; trusted advisor to founders and C-suite.
  • Sharp writer and storyteller who can move fluidly between a press pitch, an executive talking point, and an all-hands message.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience in health, wellness, diagnostics, or a scientifically regulated consumer category.
  • Experience communicating through hyper-growth, category-creation, or high-profile launch moments.

Responsibilities

  • Own the earned media strategy that keeps Function Health consistently top of mind — securing and sustaining coverage across top-tier business, health, and lifestyle press, podcasters, YouTube creators.
  • Leverage established relationships with reporters, editors, and producers at major business and consumer outlets, turning Function into a go-to source and story.
  • Identify and act on cultural moments, trends, and news cycles where Function Health has a credible, timely point of view.
  • Build and maintain direct relationships with leading podcasters, YouTubers, and digital creators in the health, wellness, and lifestyle spaces, securing high-impact appearances, interviews, and features.
  • Partner with Marketing to integrate talent, influencer, and creator engagement into broader brand and launch strategies.
  • Set standards for how the brand engages with press, talent and creators, ensuring alignment with Function's medical credibility and consumer trust.
  • Serve as a strategic communications partner and spokesperson-prep lead for the executive team and founders, including media training and message development.
  • Lead corporate and crisis communications, protecting and building the company's reputation with investors, partners, and the public.
  • Develop narrative and positioning for major company milestones — funding, product launches, partnerships, and leadership news.
  • Build credible, trusted communication channels with the medical and scientific community, including physicians, researchers, and clinical advisors.
  • Ensure all health, science, and clinical claims are communicated accurately, responsibly, and in a way that builds long-term trust.
  • Partner closely with Function's medical and scientific leadership to translate complex research into clear, credible public communication.
  • Own internal communications strategy, keeping employees informed, aligned, and engaged as the company scales.
  • Partner with People/HR and executive leadership on all-hands, major announcements, and change communications.
  • Champion a consumer-first lens across all communications work, ensuring member trust and relevance guide every story told.
  • Lead flagship events and experiential moments — press events, launches, summits, and activations — that generate visibility and cultural relevance.
  • Build the Communications function from the ground up: define the team structure, hire and develop talent, and establish agency/vendor partnerships as needed.
  • Set the vision, operating rhythm, and measurement framework for communications' contribution to brand and business goals.
