About The Position

Citi is seeking a hands-on Senior Applications Development Engineer at the VP level to drive software development for the Finance Engine – Hedge Fund Billing Technology team. The role develops and maintains high-throughput, mission-critical financial calculation engines and distributed microservices supporting global institutional hedge fund clients. The platform processes complex, tiered fee structures and high-volume transactional workflows, requiring low latency, strict transactional integrity, high availability, and resilient code. The engineer’s primary focus is coding, system design, query optimization, automated testing, and CI/CD deployment. Working with architects, product analysts, and engineering peers, the role builds full-stack solutions, diagnoses complex problems, modernizes legacy components, and promotes software craftsmanship across Java and Angular frameworks. The position also supports production systems, Agile delivery, secure development, and Citi’s engineering governance, change-management, risk, and regulatory controls.

Requirements

  • 6–10+ years of hands-on software development experience building enterprise-scale distributed systems and transactional applications.
  • Deep hands-on expertise in Core Java (Java 11/17/21), JVM memory management, multithreading and concurrency, Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Spring Batch, and Hibernate/JPA.
  • Hands-on experience building single-page applications with modern Angular, TypeScript, RxJS, HTML5, and CSS/SCSS.
  • Strong SQL programming and tuning experience with MSSQL, Oracle, or PostgreSQL, including complex joins, CTEs, indexing, and execution plans.
  • Practical experience developing event-driven producers and consumers with Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ, or JMS.
  • Working knowledge of Docker, Red Hat OpenShift or Kubernetes, Linux shell scripting, and Git/Bitbucket.
  • Experience with Maven or Gradle, Jenkins, Harness, JUnit, Mockito, and SonarQube.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and interest in writing maintainable code and addressing complex algorithmic and architectural challenges.
  • Ability to independently take technical tasks from design through production deployment.
  • Collaborative approach and clear written and verbal technical communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Background in Hedge Fund Operations, Fund Administration, Institutional Billing, Asset Management, or Capital Markets.
  • Familiarity with Redis or Hazelcast caching frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Splunk, ELK, Grafana, or Prometheus observability tools.
  • Experience with AWS, GCP, or private cloud environments.
  • Relevant Java/Spring, Kubernetes, or Cloud Practitioner certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop clean, modular, efficient, and documented code for Core Java/Spring Boot microservices and Angular single-page applications.
  • Implement and maintain high-throughput financial calculations, fee algorithms, and multi-asset billing workflows designed for low latency and high concurrency.
  • Design, develop, and consume secure REST APIs and asynchronous event-driven messaging pipelines using technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, or JMS.
  • Modernize legacy code, support containerization and framework upgrades, and maintain current architectural standards.
  • Diagnose runtime issues involving thread contention, memory leaks, and distributed transaction bottlenecks, and implement permanent fixes.
  • Develop and optimize SQL queries, stored procedures, relational schemas, and indexing strategies for MSSQL, Oracle, or PostgreSQL.
  • Maintain ACID transactional integrity, error handling, and auditable processing across batch and real-time financial data workflows.
  • Profile databases, analyze execution plans, and tune queries to reduce processing times and batch bottlenecks.
  • Write unit, integration, and component tests using JUnit, Mockito, and related mocking frameworks.
  • Follow static-analysis standards, participate in peer code reviews, and maintain code quality and security.
  • Build, maintain, and troubleshoot CI/CD pipelines, build scripts, and container deployment manifests.
  • Partner with SRE and DevOps teams to resolve Level 3 production issues using logs and metrics, and deliver root-cause fixes.
  • Participate in sprint planning, technical estimation, standups, and backlog grooming.
  • Translate user stories and functional requirements into technical designs, class diagrams, and sequence flows.
  • Share technical knowledge, pair-program on complex tasks, and collaborate with squad members to meet sprint commitments.
  • Follow secure development lifecycle standards, remediate SAST/DAST findings, and maintain data encryption and privacy protocols.
  • Ensure deliverables comply with software engineering governance, change-management protocols, and risk controls.
