About The Position

The Vermont Department of Corrections is seeking a Volunteer Services Coordinator to work out of the Chittenden County Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington. This role involves planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the development of volunteer resources within a state correctional facility. The coordinator will develop policies and procedures for recruiting, orienting, supervising, and supporting volunteers. Key responsibilities include recruiting, interviewing, orienting, training, and assigning volunteers, as well as scheduling activities, arranging space, and organizing special events. The position also entails supervising, evaluating, and providing ongoing training and counseling to volunteers. The coordinator will act as a liaison with facility staff to identify client needs and interests, and to identify volunteer resources to meet specialized interests. They will also coordinate special volunteer recognition events, promote the use of volunteers within the facility, and assist staff in optimally supervising, evaluating, and supporting volunteers. Community outreach to publicize the needs of the correctional facility and develop new volunteer initiatives is also a part of this role. The position may involve developing special programs to assist inmates with their transition from incarceration to returning to the community, and facilitating volunteer and inmate support groups. Participation in facility and community meetings, workshops, and seminars, as well as preparing reports, schedules, devising forms, and maintaining records are also required. The role may also include supervising the functions of an institutional library.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree AND two (2) years or more of experience at a technical or professional level in social services, community organizations, education, or a related human resource program.
  • OR Two years of full-time college coursework OR an associate's degree AND four (4) years or more of experience at a technical or professional level in social services, community organizations, education, or a related human resource program.
  • OR High School diploma or equivalent AND six (6) years or more of experience at a technical or professional level in social services, community organizations, education, or a related human resource program.
  • Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
  • Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
  • Previous institutional employers will be contacted and required to provide information regarding substantiated incidences of sexual abuse or resignation during a pending investigation of an allegation of sexual abuse.
  • Candidates who have any felony conviction record or who, within the past five (5) years, have been placed under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections in order to be considered for employment.
