Under general supervision, assist the board in the fair and just discharge of its obligation to students and staff through performance of the Head Coach role over and beyond the duties of a classroom teacher. Reports to the school principal and athletic director. This role requires thorough knowledge of all Athletic Policies approved by the Catawba County Schools Board of Education and responsibility for its implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. The coach must understand and consistently implement existing school system, state, and conference regulations, and be aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance. The position involves establishing the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff, designing conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program, and training and informing staff while encouraging professional growth. The coach will delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at the end of the season, analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants. Maintaining discipline, adjusting grievances, and working to increase morale and cooperation are key aspects of this role. The coach will assist the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation, and requirements for tournament and special sport events, and will coordinate the program with maintenance and school employees. Providing documentation to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility, as well as providing proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites, are also responsibilities. The coach will advise the Athletic Director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes. Training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport will be provided to each athlete. Constant attention will be given to a student athlete’s grades and conduct. The coach must be present at all practices and games, provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant, and initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. Proper paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries must be completed and submitted to the athletic office within 24 hours. The coach will direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians, determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Assisting athletes in their college or advanced educational selection and participating in the budgeting function with the Athletic Director by establishing requirements for the next season are also part of the role. Guidelines as to type, style, color, or technical specifications of equipment will be recommended. The coach is responsible for operating within budget appropriations and is accountable for all equipment and/or collection of fees for any lost or unreturned equipment. Arranging for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment and submitting annual inventory and current records are required. All equipment must be properly marked and identified before issuing or storing. The coach will monitor equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorize who may enter, and issue or requisition equipment. Athletes will only be permitted in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times. Locker rooms will be examined before and after practices and games, checking on the general cleanliness of the facility. The coach is responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment and must secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty. Instilling in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use, is essential. Parents, coaches, players, and guests will be organized for pre-season meetings. The coach will promote the sport within the school through recruiting athletes who are not in another sports program, and outside the school through news media, community recreation programs, or any other feasible manner. The coach is responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media and for maintaining good public relations with news media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. Information concerning schedules, tournaments, and results will be presented to the news media. Other duties as assigned by the school Principal in keeping with Catawba County Board of Education Policy and North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes will be performed.
